I have a Memorex dvd burner & I've burned about 70 dvd's on it over the past 6-months or so. A little while ago it stops recognising dvd's. cd's are no problem but as mentioned, when I put a dvd in the computor doesn't show a disc in the drive. I've uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers and still the same problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi coldguy welcome to windrivers forums, you aren't the only one btw, -10c here last night ! ;)
So err what drivers would these be then ? Windows has standard drivers for reading cd's & dvd's, its not like the 'old days' when you had to add some, writing adds a driver, but that's part of any writing software.
Can you tie any event to your dvd function disappearing ? Like windows updates, adding any software etc ?
& you are testing this with commercial 'pressed' disks as opposed to any you've burnt yourself?
Can you also tell me/us just what model your Memorex dvd burner is ? & have you had a whizz through the 'sticky' in this forum & looked at the suggestions there? (top post which is 'stuck' hence sticky :))

Thanks for your quick reply. I can't tie anything to the dvd stopping. However, my 13 year old son also uses the computor and has downloaded some games a while ago but can't say exactly when. I haven't been able to burn dvd's for a few months but haven't had the time to spend trying to figure out what's going on. I have a little time this weekend so I thought I would give it a shot.
I am using standard commercial pressed disks but the system won't recognise pressed or burned disks.
The burner model is a Memorex DLRWL1F16 manufactured 11/04, my processor is a P4, and my OS is Windows 2000 Pro.
Thanks again for the help.

You got a nice fast reply as I was online reviewing my mail replies at WD & I thought I'd do a few new ones while I had a moment or two :)
What are you burning your dvd's with & do you have more than one lot of burning software ? Can you go & find yourself the 'filter load order tool' off my sticky & post me the results ?

I'm using Nero 6 for burning. I used to use Roxio and I have another burning software called Deep Burner that I haven't used.
There are five filters listed for the burner, 4 upper class and 1 lower class. The version info is:
1. 1st upper class filter
Driver name: incdrm.sys
File location: c:\winnt2\system32\drivers
File description: Ahead MRW filter driver
Product version: 4, 2, 16, 0 [4.2.16.0]
Product name: Easy Write Reader
Filter version: 4, 2, 16, 0 [4.2.16.0]
Company name: Ahead Software AG
2. 2nd upper class filter
Driver name: incdpass.sys
File location: c:\winnt2\system32\drivers
File description: Ahead RW filter driver
Product version: 4, 2, 16, 0 [4.2.16.0]
Product name: InCD
Filter version: 4, 2, 16, 0 [4.2.16.0]
Company name: Ahead Software AG
3. 3rd upper class filter
Driver name: cdralw2k.sys
File location: c:\winnt2\system32\drivers
File description: CDRAL for Windows 2000 kernal driver
Product version: 7.1.0.188 [7.1.0.188]
Product name: Drag-to-Disc
Filter version: 7.1.0.188 [7.1.0.188]

4. 4th upper class filter

File description: CDRom Class Filter Driver
Product version: 2.0.4.3 [2.0.4.3]
Product name: GEAR.wrks
Filter version: 7.xx [2.0.4.3]
Company name: GEAR Software Inc.
5. Lower class filter
Driver name: cdr4_2k.sys
File location: c:\winnt2\system32\drivers
File description: CDR4 CD and DVD Burner Helper Driver

Hope this helps.

Lots of class filters ! This is most likely the issue :).
..used to use Roxio ..
..3. 3rd upper class filter
Driver name: cdralw2k.sys
File location: c:\winnt2\system32\drivers
File description: CDRAL for Windows 2000 kernal driver
Product version: 7.1.0.188 [7.1.0.188]
Product name: Drag-to-Disc
Filter version: 7.1.0.188 [7.1.0.188]
Company name: Roxio
(& there's another entry relating to roxio too)
Roxio doesn't seem to have uninstalled itself completely (not un-common) so again back to my sticky & try the bit about upper & lower filters, & if you aren't using this deep burner thing I'd remove that for now, first also. (multiple burning software often conflicts).
Let me/us know how you get on with that :).

I removed Deep Burner, Roxio, and Nero. Uninstalled the burner and deleted the two Roxio filters (cdr4_2k.sys & cdralw2k.sys) from the system32\drivers file. After restarting, I reinstalled Nero and tested again with a commercial pressed disc and this time the computor didn't see the drive at all and wouldn't run a cd or dvd. I reloaded the Roxio filters from the Recycle bin and the computor saw the drive and the cd player worked. However, dvd 's still don't work.
Is it possible that I'm missing the filter that I need for the dvd drive? How can I get rid of the other class filters other than deleting them?

You don't need a class filter to read a dvd, they are for writing, so they are per product & not for a drive. If any uninstall doesn't remove the keys you need to edit the registry.
From what you just said, you haven't done then the upper & lower filters fix ?

I had tried the upper & lower filter fix and had the same problem. Called Memorex and they are replacing the drive under warranty.
Thanks for all your help, it's greatly appreciated.
