Welcome to the forums ruby91. So im taking it that D: drive is your CD drive.
Right click on my computer and select properties. Then go to the hardware tab and select device manager. If there are any yellow icons by hardware post them. And also see that your CD drive is listed under the CD roms catagory.

That is your harddrive. You want CD drives. It is represnted with a Icon that looks like a grey box with a CD drive on top.
Ur manager should look sumthing like this.
1.Computer
2. Disk drives
3.Display drivers.
4.DVD/CD-rom DRIVES you want this one

Years later... I just did some Windows updates. I haven't done them for a year. Suddenly my computer can't find my CD drive either. I have a Dell. Did your computer ever find your CD-drive? If so, what did you do... if you recall?

This is a common XP problem usually associated with the removal of CD/DVD burning software such as NERO, etc., however it can happen for other reasons. This solution works in both XP & VISTA:
Click Start,
Click 'Run,'
Then type in 'regedit' and click OK.
Expand 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,' (expand = clicking small +)
Expand 'System,'
Expand 'Current control Set,'
Expand 'Control,'
Expand 'Class.'
You must then look down the series of values and find the one that it's first set ends in 965. Here is mine for example:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFCI-08002BE10318}
Click this once. You will see a list open to it's right. In that list you are looking for the UPPER FILTERS, & LOWER FILTERS.
Right click and delete each of these.
Close regedit and restart your system. You will have your D Drive back.
I must state this !!!WARNING!!! before closing. Follow this carefully and be careful in regedit!!!
If you run into any snags post them.
Good luck!

Thanks, Darth - I wound up going to the Device Manager, clicking IDE/ATA, uninstalling Secondary IDE Channel then doing a search for new hardware. The computer picked it up as new and reinstalled it. I was kinda hoping it was broken so I'd have an excuse to get a Mac. ;-)
