Updating Nvidia Driver Screws Over My Comp

My Nvidia Geforce2 MX driver is way outdated (version 5.6.7.3) but when I updated it my computer began continuously rebooting itself everytime windows would load up and I couldn't do anything at all outside of SafeMode. I ended up having to reformat my whole harddrive as it appeared to be the only possible solution to fix this problem.

Could anyone out there help me with this issue? Do you know why it does this or how I could update my video card driver without screwing over my comp?

Now that you have reformated you may find the new drivers install correctly. It's possible there was some other issue causing the new drivers to crash the pc.

You always have the driver rollback option which you can get to in safe mode if it does crash or even system restore which will take the system back to before the install of the new drivers.

Make sure you have all MS updates installed also.

Ok, thanks for the response. Maybe I'll try it again, I just don't want to have all this happen again because it is a pain in the ***.

I wasn't aware of a driver rollback option but I did try the system restore and it tried to restore it but was unable to. Is there any way to make sure the system restore will work if I were to try this again? so I don't have to reformat.

Well technically the system restore should have worked; I've used it several times for Ati driver install issues with no problem.

The fact that it didn't really makes me think something else was wrong with the original XP install.

For the driver rollback go into device manager, then double-click the display driver, go to Driver tab, then click rollback driver button.

If it does crash the pc again then you will have to go into safe mode obviously to be able to get to the rollback option.

Absolutely. This is an MS product we are talking about. ;)

I think you'll find that both system restore and rollback will work just fine if you really need to use them; but make sure you make a backup of any data anyway just in case.
