Update to my original posting: I have reloaded the Bytecc drivers and my situation has changed a little. The system now recognizes the external enclosure but installs a generic disk drive driver instead of a DVD driver. I am still working at a solution but would appriciate any input.

Original Posting Below:

I am trying to use a Lite-on DVD R/RW drive (model LDW-851S) in an External Enclosure (BYTECC ME320 Series). It connects via USB and I am connecting it to my Latitued D600 laptop (XP Pro SP2). XP recognizes that new hardware has been added when I plug it in, but it does not recognize the hardware and it will not load the correct drivers (loads unknown device). I have gone to the Lite-on site and it tells me that XP has the DVD drivers I need (at least for the initial install). I have gone into device manager, but I can not get Windows to recognize the device. I have tried moving the DVD jumper from Master to CS, but this does not help. I tried the DVD ROM from my Home PC (which works on my PC) and I am getting the same problem. I also tried loading the fireware for the DVD R/RW from the Lite-On site, but it will not load as it does not see the DVD R/RW. I am running out of ideas. I believe what I am trying to doing is possible - I am hoping I am just missing something simple. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

Hi & welcome to wd.

So this unit now is at least showing up in 'my computer' & getting a drive letter ?

btw generally that's 'right' & the desription won't change until you put a dvd into the unit - have you tried that ?
