Just like the title says, my DVD-rom drive is intermittent. I just reloaded windows due to a virus, and reformatted. When I restart, 90% of the time, the drive doesnt show up under My Computer. And if I insert a cd or dvd, it just spins up for a second, then quits and then nothing. I try restarting all the time, and if I insert a windows cd, sometimes it doesnt autostart the "windows set up". What's going on that's causing it to only see it a few times out of many? The drive is brand new, and used probably 10 times until reformat.

Thanks in advance.

Hi mike & welcome to wd forums.

'intermittent' are the worst kind of errors, truely a pain to track down ;).

I think though that the fact that the cd/dvd doesn't consistently 'turn up' in device manager, says that your original setup or kit is probably in question .. & since you've only used the drive a very little, I'd be wanting to test this elsewhere to make sure its 'well' before proceeding ( either swap this unit into a known good PC & test there, or get the unit back to whoever sold you it & ask them to test it)
