hello i need help im about to do format c:/y but when i did it says "cannot lock drive. The volume is still in use"
how can i solves this..

I didn't know there was a /y switch. What is it supposed to do?
these are all the switches I'm aware of -

FORMAT d:[/1][/4][/8][/F:(size)] [/N:(sectors)] [/T:(tracks)][/B|/S][/C][/V:(label)] [/Q][/U][/V]

ok i have tried format c:/u but still wont let me format bcuz says that the volume could not be locked bcuz still in use..how do i do this?

try booting with the winxp cd and format from there,if you boot from the C: drive with the operating system on it it won`t let you format,good luck

when i put the windows xp disk in nothing happens..

You have to enter bios and make it boot to the cdrom first.
And you need a original XP CD

I had the same problem (luckily as it turned out as I didn't need to format the drive anyway). Anyway the instructions I was given were - press F8 as the PC boots up. You'll see a message that flashes up very quickly to press F8 for alternate boot device. Then you get an option to choose where to boot from. Choose the drive you've got your XP disk in and Bob's yer uncle.

lol, I just noticed all the sad faces that replaced the brackets and colons.
