Hello
 Please could some one advise me on the following problem.
When I click on a link from a email Microsoft Internet Explorer opens a blank page.
Yes I can copy and paste the link into the address bar no problem.
But at the moment I keep getting a message that there is a updated version of Webroot Spy Sweeper, :butt: but when I click Yes all I get is a Blank page.
:confused:This has me really baffled.
Can anybody out there help.
I thank you for your time.
Terry.

What happens when you disable SpySweeper? Give it a shot. And, if that is the problem, perhaps you can just go to their site and d/l the update manually?

Does the blank page say: http:/1.0 404 Object Not Found ?
Or, is it completely blank?
If so, try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;835383&spid=2578&sid=global
If not, perhaps you can reinstall SP2.

The screen always opens Blank non off the aforementioned items that you mentioned.
I shall reinstall sp2 but will that not overwrite all the current software that I have installed.

I should think if its every email link then its in Outlook Express in the security Options
Open Outlook Express
At the top click tools
Then at the bottom of that menu is Options click that
Then at the top is a tab called Security.
Look in there see if there is something about email links not allowed

Try reinstalling XP in Repair mode. You may have to reinstall a few things (probably not), but it should pickup most software and settings that you have. SP2 goes in again after that...

I think before resorting to a repair install this is a worth a shot ..
You may have to re-register the dll files.
Start>Run>regsvr32 urlmon.dll>ok
Start>Run>regsvr32 actxprxy.dll >ok
Start>Run>regsvr32 scrrun.dll>ok
Start>Run> regsvr32 msxml.dll >ok
Start>Run>regsvr32 shdocvw.dll >ok
Start>Run>regsvr32 browseui.dll >ok
Start>Run>regsvr32 msjava.dll>ok

Happy 2006 to everyone.
Sorry I have not been around to read this thread but I have been very busy.
I shall try the things that have been mentioned as and time allows.
 But first something to put the techs brains into confusion.
1. When I use "Outlook Express" and click on a link that is contained within that e-mail "Internet Explorer" opens to a blank page and the only way that I can get the page to open is to copy and paste the link into the address bar, then the page opens fine.
2. When I use "Microsoft Office Outlook 2003" and open a e-mail with a link to a web page   and click on the link for that web page, it opens with no problem.
So if there is any more ideas out there before I try the things mentioned please do so I will be grateful.
Thank You for time.

Install FireFox. Safer all round (Err, generally - Except the Quicktime Plugin seems a bit iffy sometimes). You can get an "IE" plugin for it, which allows you to open IE in a tab for a link that doesn't work properly for FireFox.

Well my idea is to try the things suggested & then tell us what did & didn't work, as very often one suggestion having no effect means that it can't be x etc - one suggestion often flows from another, as software troubleshooting can often be a process of elimination coupled with a lot of inspired guesswork :)

Is outlook express the default email client... or is outlook 2003? That can do weird stuff if you are using both on a single user.

You don't have any chioce: Outlook Express is a vital component of IE. IE won't opperate without it. Outlook 2003 is fine installed on top.
Remove Oulook Express and you have removed IE effectively (not litterly of course, but it won't work). This is from the IE site and I've even tried it myself! (Stupid I know, but I won't do it again). I did however, seem to remember that I could uninstall IE and reinstall it. This was on XP (no SP's) so I'm not sure if it will work now.
Give it a try...

Hi Confused
I have done all that you mentioned in your last post and all that you have mentioned are there and appear to be working, or was I supposed to restart the PC after the item that you mentioned.
The only way that I can think off doing is a non-destructive restore but I have forgotten how to do it.
:flames: I have Norton Ghost 10 installed but not sure if the problem an PC back up automatically ever week :flames:
Any other ideas that could help to resolve the problem.
