purchased a brother wl-660 laser printer in january 1998. Ran fine on older 486 system using drivers that came on disk with it. Trying to use on a newer Dell PC/windows 95/pentium and it won't print at all (from word for instance "There was an error writing to LPT1: for the printer (brother wl-660): a device attached to the system is not functioning. Brother support says that it sounds like the port on the computer or the cable or the port on the printer. 1) The exact printer and cable work fine on another dell pc/windows 98 in my office 2) The computer works fine to another bi-directional printer (cannon multipass c25000) that it was hooked up to.

Any ideas?

I have had a similar experience: Installed Canon Multipass10 (printer/fax/scanner) software onto Dell P2-450 on separate LPT2 port - it worked fine, but the HP-laserjet on LPT1: stopped working with the same message as you mentioned - "error printing to lpt1:" etc!
Canon say it is a problem with Dell/Microsoft or HP - not them!
Anyone else had this problem - the common factor so far seems to be Dell!!!
