i just upgraded my old lappy to xp from 98 after adding ram...

Before the upgrade i had no problems with my cd drive. Right now the cd rom drive will only play audio cds and if i put anything else in the drive it cant read it. I get the error bad disk corrupt data popup. the disks are not scratched so i have narrowed it down to a driver problem. I have searched all over the place for drivers and cant find the fix. Of course in the install xp found its own driver it tells me it is a xm-1802b drive and supplied a standard driver for it. ive tried unistalling it and even a bios update. Im hoping someone has seen this issue before and it is something simple.

Thank you in advance for any help with my curious issue

This one must be for me .. :eek2: :thumbs2:

First thing to try is booting from your windows xp system cd, that's outside windows, so that'll confirm its a software issue & the drive isn't just coincidentally failing at the same time.

..even a bios update..

For the laptop ? What about firmware updates for the drive ?

..upgraded my old lappy to xp from 98 ..

We may be in trouble though from 'the off' - you did check that this laptop can run xp ? not all stuff can be 'just upgraded' ..

And even if the hardware turns out to be XP compatable, if it was an "upgrade" over the top of 98 rather than a re-format & clean install, bits of 98-ness can be hanging about causing problems...
