samsung SH-W162C

Merry christmas all

Ive recieved a samsung SH-W162C dvd rw, and iam having problems using it. Ive installed it but no cd's are being read by it. Ive downloaded this file

Iam not sure if this is the correct driver or not.

Iam running xp pro, if that helps, before i did have a cdrw and a dvd rom, ive taken the cdrw out and put my new dvdrw in place off the dvdrom.

In my computer only one drive is shown up(k)

Any help on this would be brill.

Your link is corrupted, so I'm not sure what you have downloaded, but no extra driver should be required for XP to read CDs with your drive, XP has its own that has enabled your previous drives to function.

When you say no CDs are being read, are DVDs being read?

If I understand you correctly, you removed both of the old drives and connected the new DVD-RW in place of the DVD-ROM? And now one drive (the new one) is shown in the Device Manager?

Did you un-install the burning software belonging to the old CD-RW, and have you installed the burning software for the new drive? (Having two sets of burning software installed at the one time can prevent drives from working properly.)

Basic troubleshooting:

IDE CD/DVD drives (as well as hard drives) have jumpers on the back for setting cable position.

There are three settings (two of which are politically incorrect :) ): master (MA), slave (SL) and cable select (CS). Master and slave correspond to positions on the cable. The end of the cable is master, and the middle is slave. Cable select causes the drive to take its identity from its cable position.

If you have two drives on the IDE ribbon cable, both set to master or slave, most often neither of the two drives will work.

Sometimes if you have one drive set as master or slave and the other drive as cable select (which is usally the factory default setting) the cable select drive will not work. If you use cable select, it is better to have both drives set to cable select.

Some controller/drive combinations are tolerant of mismatched cable position/drive settings. Some are not. It is better to have a drive set to master in the master position on the cable and slave to slave.

Some controllers just do not like the cable select setting on some drives.

Your safest bet is to match cable position to drive settings -- master/master and slave/slave.

One more thing. The red stripe on the IDE ribbon cable goes to the 1 pin, which is usually on the power connector side of the IDE connector. If you have this reversed, your drive will not work. However, it is now difficult to reverse the cable because most new cables are keyed and cannot be inserted backwards.
