I have a Dell E771p monitor that worked perfectly until we installed windows xp. Now I can't change the resolution or, for that matter, anything related to the monitor. After doing some online research, I have found that perhaps this monitor does not work with xp. Any suggestions?

I highly doubt it is the monitor causing the problem. As long as a monitor supports resolutions of 800x600 or higher it should be fine with XP. What version of Windows did you upgrade from? I think you just may need to uninstall and reinstall an XP compatible video card driver. Unless your video card does not support XP. Could we get more information about your computer? If it is a dell you can list the service tag number and the specs can be looked up.

Sure. The Service Tag is 12V6Q11. Thanks.

We use machines exactly like this at the school I work for, with those exact monitors and they all run fine on XP. I would say it would have something to do with the video drivers. I would assume you upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP, so I would uninstall any video driver that may be installed and install the Windows XP driver. The optiplex GX260 uses the Integrated Intel 845G chipset graphic card, so here are Dell's drivers http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=RC957014&l=en&s=k12&releaseid=R79733&SystemID=PLX_PNT_P4_GX260&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2441&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=5&formatcnt=1&fileid=104486

or you can download them from Intel http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=865 Just select your version of Windows XP.

If none of that works, I would recommend a fresh install of XP. I have not seen much success in upgrading, however, you did have Windows 2000 before so it should have gone pretty smooth.

Man, YOU ROCK. You have completely fixed the problem with my monitor that I have been frustrated with for about six months now. We were to the point of just buying another monitor. To say thanks just doesn't seem to cover it.

I guess the fact that you fixed the problem would do.
