Is it the mini usb connection by any chance if so you can get a new cable at most good pc suppliers.Manuals are here (http://books.jvcservice.com/booklist.asp?Model=GR-DVL20) to check how to connect correctly.

I have various small usb leads and none fit, it's not a std rectangle it has a small "key" in the middle opposite the connecters. have tried taking pics but not very good. The manual spec calls it Digital Video Connecter, [DV OUT] (i.link) apparently something to do with IEEE1394-1995.?? will be looking that up too!

i-link would be firewire

If memory serves there are 4 and 6 wire cables.

Yes, DV OUT is Firewire (IEEE1394, called i-link by Sony). You'll need a Firewire port on the computer, and a lead with a mini Firewire plug on one end, or a standard lead & an adaptor like Archer has posted.
