I never had a reason to use it before, but my client wants to be able to have his accountant access his quick books over internet.
Here is the set up:
My client has a broadband connection > to a Netgear router > to 6 workstations and 1 File server. The File server is running Win2K Server (SP4) with workgroups, There are 3 directories that the workstations have access to all with Accounts and Permissions set. I used this guide:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-1032135.html
I found online to set it up.
I set up an account for the Accountant, I setup a directory on the server and gave him permission and access rights. I put in a second NIC and walked through that guide. I tried it with both Static IP and tried the DHCP with IP Auto assignments (as the guide sugested).
I tried to login to the server with VPN (on a local machine because that was available). I get an error when I try to connect (that I don't have permision to access the server) Do I need to modify the router settings as well or is this a bigger problem.
Please be gentle this VPN totaly new to me ( I do "light" networking on the side) and money is a "object" my client is trying to save - I heard that I can buy fancy hardware but my client will use PC anywhere if it gets to costly and complicated. TIA
