this is what message i get when i try play somthing

There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

Do you have no sound at all or just when using a certain application such as Windows Media Player?

From what I read your comp came with win xp home and the ac97 sound - verify by running Everest Home http://tinyurl.com/a5yja then if that's so download and install the drivers here: http://tinyurl.com/nbkxw

^ What he said!

I would suggest FIRST going into add/remove programs and delete/erase the driver you downloaded earlier or through Device manager and finding the sound 'card' if it shows there.
