Hi, I'm new to this so please forgive me if I sound dumb for asking this question. I recently reinstalled XP on my Antec system. I am currently using an AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1.83 GHz, 512 MB RAM. I'm not sure what sound card was on this system as the system was given to me as a gift. As of last week, the sound was fine. Then it would not boot properly, so I reinstalled XP Pro and since then, no sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Antec Makes computer cases and powersupplies. We need to know the manufacturer of the soundcard or motherboard if it is onboard sound.

Download AIDA32 from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html and run this as it will scan your system. You then can generate a report and it may provide some insight on to your hardware configuration.

Or if you know the mother board brand and model with onboard sound we can take it from there.

I have downloaded the AIDA32, it says that the motherboard I have is and Asus A7V8X. I'm not sure how to find the type of sound board I have. I have seen Legacy and Soundmax in some of the old settings files.

Well that motherboard has onboard sound and the driver can be found here http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?model=A7V8X&SLanguage=en-us

I downloaded the above file, but still have no sound. There is a yellow question mark with an exclamation point in Device Manager under Other Devices; Multimedia Audio Controller.

Try removing the device from Device manager and then rebooting your computer. Maybe Windows will redetect it.

To remove the device go to your device manager and click once on the device. Then click the computer icon with the red X to uninstall it. Then reboot.

Hopefully that will work.

Hi Bob,

Still no good. It does say it found new hardware, but am still unable to install. I go into the correct directory, but it will not allow me to install. I guess I will just have to go without sound.

Thanks,
Tracey

If it can find the hardware AND you have downloaded the CORRECT drivers with the .inf file to a separate folder then you just click on the device, select update driver, tell windows to mind it's own business and YOU will pick the driver, and eventually stear the search to the folder and inf file you downloaded.

That should work.

the yellow question mark that says unknow media device is nuthing go ahead and uninstall it then go down to sound video and game controllers under there uninstall the named audio device or the one that just says audio or media controller. then right click on sound video and game controllers and check for hardware changes-tell the install wiz to look in the directory you unziped the asus dirver to. you wont want to unzip it to your desktop as it cant be moved once its in use.

Well, Golly, PG, you should have a driver CD for your system and you ought to be able to install the correct driver from it. There are a couple of things that might be happening here. Sometimes, you get a system problem due to a power surge or whatever that requires reloading Windows, but may also have a corresponding hardware problem. Your computer got zapped, and your sound chip was fried, perhaps.

Try downloading and running Everest Home Edition from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

It will identify the sound chip on your board, and if you post the info, someone will point you to the proper driver. Worst case scenario: the on-board sound has died. No big deal. You can buy a sound card for $6 plus shipping and up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010360057+4024&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=57
