Sound Occasionally Works

Hi I have (according to Device Manager) "Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)" for my sound card/chip in my laptop; this is the one that came with the less than helpful support disc. Most of the time I get the "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" message but occasionally it will work perfect. It shares IRQ 18 with a modem that I don’t use so I tried disabling it but didn’t help. I've also tried updating the drivers and using different ones but it still has the same effect. I've had this problem on the preinstalled XP home and on my XP Professional Corporate SP2. Any help would be brilliant as I really don’t know what else to do.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Its one that came preinstalled in the laptop, the driver is for VIA. I will open up the laptop and see if there is anything written down and ill give everest a try.
