Are you sure that the 40GB disk is a good drive? Maybe it has gone bad on you.

Check in Disk managemant as to the state of the drive and see if right clicking and selecting open or explore works.

He wants you to connect the 40 gb drive the your usb and then goto:

Control panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management.

There you should see the drive and be able to tell what state it is in.

The post back here.

I think DonJ is right here, and you have a dead drive, aymanok. Western Digital and I aren't currently speaking to each other because I had so many recent problems with their product. 8 defective drives in under 2 months, including a drive with electronics so bad it prevented the computer I installed it in from booting, a DOA replacement for a DOA drive, one "recertified" drive with more bad sectors than good ones, and 2 drives that WD spent over 2 months replacing.

Moral here is that even if the drive is fresh out of the box, you (unfortunately) can't assume it is functional. Your system detected the 80 GB drive just fine, so the 40 is dead. Pretty much cut and dried.

I will also offer this bit of advice - MANY USB 2.0 cards will not provide sufficient power from one port to run some external drives - it could be that simple.

Try the drive on another comp - or 3.
