Welcome to Windrivers Wrenchhead
Did it come with the Dell restore cds? Did have a warranty?
If you have just bought it, you should be talking to the vendor first!
It may be that sound is turned off in the bios/setup or that the onboard sound is faulty. I am not sure that 2000 has an audio service in services.msc... but I don't have a 2k box to check... anyone?

I would definately check the BIOS settings to see if the audio is turned off. Does the sound card show up in device manager? If so I would check Dell's website and reinstall the sound driver.

When you turn the computer on and see the Dell Logo just hit the F2 key and you will enter the bios. I cannot remember the exact options you will see in the bios but in one of the options will be a sub catagory that will say if the integrated sound is enabled or disabled.

The Vendor MUST supply you at least with the certificate of authenticity - do yo have one?

Go here: http://tinyurl.com/yxuryd
and download and read through the service manual and users guides - they might even already be on your machine if you look a bit.
Should cover how to enter bios and what you can change.
The EBay ad said you would get a Certificate of Authenticity - check that you have one like NooNoo said - VERY important.

If you read the User's guide I steared you to you know how to get into System setup (bios) and that the section of bios labelled Integrated devices has an entry 'sound' which should be set to 'On' as default -if it shows as 'Off' set it on then follow the bios instuctions to save that change and exit.
We also need to know what sound card you have. Make and model. The Dell site shows that comp coming basic with analog sound only as far as I can see.

Yes you should see a catagory called Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options) and in there you should see the option to turn the integrated sound on and off. Here is the best picture I could find for reference

It is from a GX270 but they are pretty much the same as a GX260

Well if it is a GX260 then the sound card would be made by SoundMAX and be called Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio. The driver for Windows 2000 is here http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R56339&SystemID=PLX_PNT_P4_GX260&os=WNT5&osl=en&deviceid=2430&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=3&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=67126.

Yeah that would be the SoundMAX card with the driver I posted. We have hundreds of GX260's, GX270's and GX280's here at the school I work at with that sound card. I think the new GX620's use it to.

OK, you need to be sure. Look on the case of the dell, should be a pinkish label with some numbers on it and the title is Certificate of Authenticity. If it is not there, you are not running a legal copy of windows... and you have been ripped off.
