You may have to take the lid off the case and check that there is an audio cable and its connected correctly

and then check your software settings and audio options in the program you use. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

Does the dvdrom play CD sound?

What software are you using to view the DVD? Is this a shop bought DVD?

OK, so from that we can say that there is nothing wrong with sound on your machine... there is something up with the DVDrom. Have you tried a number of different shop bought dvds?

according to Cyberlink (http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/support/answerbox_productfaq.jsp?FID=2217&nProdId=1&nProdVerId=102) you need to reinstall powerdvd and apply any patches from here (http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/download/patches_1_ENU.html) (please check your powerdvd version!)

Also if it is XP you should not need the audio cable from the dvdrom to the sound card
