Scanned pictures come up blank

I have a NEC ReadyScan 636i USB scanner running through Microsoft Picture It! My system is a 550 Athlon on a Asus k7m board with 128 mb pc133 ram. The problem is that when I scan a picture it goes through the scanning process, but comes up as a black rectangle.

Turn the pictures over!!!
I know what your going to say but I couldn't resist.

Have you checked for any updated USB file for the motherboard.
Also try the scanner on another computer to see if you get the same problem
