 Over the past two nights I have had my PC stop working with no explanation, what happens is that while I am listen to the radio on the Internet the computer stops working, the screen goes black and the hard drive light comes on and stays on.
I recently upgrade the CPU to the following.
Motherboard:
CPU Type DualCore Intel Pentium D 920, 2800 MHz (14 x 200)
Motherboard Name ECS P4M800-M7 (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN)
Motherboard Chipset VIA P4M800 Pro
System Memory 1024 MB
BIOS Type AMI (10/19/05)
Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
Is there any thing in the way of changes that I should have done. I have check the ECS website to find a bios upgrade but I am unable to find one.
Any advice would help me to under stand the problem.
Thank You.

I also had a black screen. Bios came up, but when windows was supposed to
initiate with Blue line clips go across bottom of windows Xp it was BLACK!!! and
of course harddrive light staying on bright and not moving. Bios Saw name of
drive Western Digital and S/N. When I put it back in as a slave windows saw it and wanted to install it. I am not sure of the problem. But I have a funky feeling it is a mean virus that will not let you boot! The reason I say that I am using western digital again!!! I WROTE ZERO`S TWICE TO hard drive and then
loaded Windows. I had a lot of stuff. on that old hard drive That I could not recover. BACK UP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I would GUESS that if you are listening away and then the comp 'locks up' you need to:
1) ad-aware and spybot, etc
2) check memory (memtest and at least one other test)
3) do a sfc /scannow
4) verify/update your audio codecs
5) update your mobo chipset
6) buy a stereo
:) added a little humour - things are a little tense these days

I am so glade it is not me that is having the same problem, luckily I back my pc up once a month with "Norton Ghost" but I am going to revise that and do it twice a month.
Thankfully My lap top is still working fine with no problems.
I have spoken to my local PC tech and he recommends doing a complete re-insolation off XP from scratch on a new hard drive.
Whether or not that is the right way to go is anybody's guess.

Please could you advise me on how to Verify/update codecs along with items numbers 3 and 5
As for number 6 the radio station that I listen to, the transmitted signal only travels about 50 miles or so so I am just out off signal range.

Well found out it may be a boot virus or it corrupted boot files. If that is the
case I guess you need to keep it running 24 hours a day no START UP

:flame: Well the update on the problem is that is running sort off but at the moment it is scanning for any virus with a updated Norton Anti-Virus but some point in the scanner the system it crashes and restarts automatically.
Could the power supply be a cause of the problems that I am having.

You should be able to reset the BIOS using jumpers 2-3 ,or alternately
removing the coin shaped CMOS battery for a few minutes. make sure the
system is completely unplugged from any power source while your monkeying
around in there.

The story of a bad BIOS flash usually has a bad ending.

:guns: I have tried by removing the battery and selecting jumpers 2/3 both of which the did not work, as you have previous said this could have been a very bad ending.
Please could some advise on which MOB (without graphics on) would be a good purchase as the graphics card I currently use is great. :thumbs2:

Yes That is the one that Windrivers advised me to use, I am not blaming you for the problem I am sure that there is a problem with the OS system.

Actually, noone advised you to play with your Bios, you were advised to consider a motherboard (mobo) chipset update as well as checking your codecs, testing your memory, mending your drivers and checking for malware.
In any event, 2 beeps on an AMI bios error usually means parity error associated with memory.
If you have more than one ram module, start with one module in (download and read your mobo manual for which slot is used) and if that doesn't post right switch it with another module.

:guns: I have done as you suggested and I still get 2 long beeps and the module that I installed got warm very quickly and the PC still did not re boot.
Terminal me thinks :guns:

Seems a waste to burn up memory but,is that the only module you have?
As CCT pointed out it could be your memory, perhaps that module
you tried is bad.
Are the contacts burned on it?
Please don't use singular 'you' loosely as if I were the forum.
Gives me the Chortles.

I have checked all the memory modules that I have used and there is no visible signs of heat damage.
I apologize for the use of the wrong word (you).
I still feel that it is terminal for the current mobo as well have a OS system that has become corrupted some how.

 so I am right in saying that the mobo has gone to that great place in the cyber space. ;)

Your mobo accepts single ram modules in EITHER slot - did you try a single module install in the other slot? (ie, you got overheating in one slot, did you try the other?).
If you did, then the board is fried.

:) To be honest I did not want to risk damaging any of the ram that I have. ;)

I have finished rebuilding my desk top PC with new mobo and a new HDD, please is there any one out there that could in clearly defined steps bring me up to speed on how to install the XP software from the three disk pack and is there any other precautions that I should take with the installation of said software.
I thank you in advance for this advice.
Regards.

3 disk pack??
XP comes on a single disk...
If these are recovery disks and you have changed the motherboard and processor, they may no longer work (unless one of them is an operating system cd)

Hello NooNoo
I have installed a new Master HDD as the old died on me and started to make
funny noises, not only that the O/S software had be come corrupt some how. so at the moment the system dose not have a O/S on at the moment.
I have tested to make sure that everything is in the right place to and all appears to be working but not having software on it is difficult to tell.
Please follow the following link to see disk pack purchased.
http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Microsoft_WIN_XP_HOME_ENG_3PK
The only reason that I am going to all this trouble is to have the satisfaction of saying to myself I built that for me.
I hope that the new year went well for you NooNoo.

What does each disk say on it? The link you gave just shows 3 disks, not what they are. I am guessing 1 will be the XP disk itself, 1 other may be a companion disk with help stuff on it and the third may be a service pack.

You are right NooNoo it only comes on 1 disk, pleased to report that the desk top is up and running at last but not at peak performance
The only thing is that the new Mobo which is the following
Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Celeron D 346, 3066 MHz (23 x 133)
Motherboard Name ECS RS400-A (2 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 1 AGP Express, 2 DDR DIMM, 2 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN)
Motherboard Chipset ATI Radeon Xpress 200
System Memory [ TRIAL VERSION ]
BIOS Type Award (11/03/05)
Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port Printer Port (LPT1)
 If I have read the instruction manual right only supports HT Technology, I would like to use a Duo2Core CPU but as I am not sure if this motherboard will take that type off CPU.

There will be a list of supported cpus and motherboard with the minimum bios revision at the ECS website.

I have checked the ECS website and I find it is very difficult to interpret and confusing, as this is down to that it just looks like a jumble off numbers and letters.

it looks pretty clear to me (http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Support/CPU_Support.aspx?DetailID=507&MenuID=48&LanID=8) This is a direct link to the board, scroll down to see the results.
The left hand column gives the model name, the middle column gives the processor speed (cache, fsb, socket) the right hand column gives whether it will run in the board or not. Above the list is the bios revision.
