I've an eMachine notebook
I can barely read any kind of disks.
Somtimes it works and most of the time doesn't!
I can't read audio cds
can't read data cds
can't read dvd movies
can't read data dvds
can't burn on blank cds or dvds
neither on RW cds or dvds

sometimes when I try to insert audio cds 4 or 5 times it works after all that time.

I tried cleaning it, didn't work
I tried different blank cds/dvds brands but still doesn't work!

when it reads audio cds and sometime data, I can actually rip the music tracks using iTunes and copy the data from the cd to my hard drive. This does not happen all the time, only somtimes when I try and try for an hour or so.

Can anyone help me?

Sounds like you may need to check the aspi layer
Download this program and run it

Welcome to Windrivers anmar0

here is the support page for your notebook (http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Notebooks&subcat=M-Series&model=M6809)

Have you updated any of the drivers recently? Can you post the model number of the cd/dvd unit please?

In device manager, does the cd unit have any error messages? any ! or ? next to it?

Ferrit,

Here's what that checker found out:

Something is not properly installed and has been replaced by an older version.

What is it? and where to get it? and how to install it?

NooNoo, Thanks for welcoming me!

I haven't updated any drivers because on eMachines' website they didn't have anything for my dvd or cd drive. they only had stuff for my network card and audio video drivers. you can go check them out if you think I might need them. I have already updated all of them anyway.

In the device manager, I checked and in the device status area it's said that it's working properly

"This device is working properly."

Does this sound like the name of the unit (or how you mentioned it) you were looking for?:

Slimtype DVDRW SDW-431S

Your knowledge is Gold, Guys!!

Thank You!!

Well you need the via drivers - they are the motherboard drivers which drive your optical drive. A quick google of that type of drive and there are a number of people complaining it quit on them.

Aspi update can be got from the links in this tutorial about aspi (http://aspi.radified.com/)

That's what it's said when I installed the 4.60 version of aspi!
I tried copying the wowpost.exe & winaspi.dll from the 4.71 to my \system folder first,
It didn't work and the aspi checker reported the same.
I downloaded the 4.60 and it's said what I just showed you.

Still doesn't work.

Then I downloaded the VIA thingy from emachines.com and installed.
now I have an updated copy and an old one which it kept in my hard drive.

I don't know what to do next?
I tried to google, nobody seems to have the same problem.

It appears your comp is quite happy with the aspi layer so maybe you should try to uninstall the device in device manager, then shutdown, then restart,

I had an eMachines desktop before, I uninstalled the cd writer driver but couldn't install it back. I kept asking people how to fix it and tried alot of things until people started to tell me [REINSTALL WINDOWS]

I really don't want to do it again!

I will give this one a bigger chance to be fixed without uninstalling.

does anyone have any other choices please?

Then take the laptop to a shop where they can test the drive for you.

Lots of people have the problems you described:
I can't read audio cds
can't read data cds
can't read dvd movies
can't read data dvds
can't burn on blank cds or dvds
neither on RW cds or dvds

Lots of people have this problem - the cd/dvd drive has died. Just because it detects, doesn't mean it's good. It needs to be tested.
