I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I have search and read the material I could find but could not resolve.

I am using XP, Nero 7 Burning ROM. What I was trying to do was simply use DVDs and Nero to backup data. I have tried numerous computations with little success. I have been able to backup two disks but not the third, which has video files but well within the limit size of the DVD. I even tried taking one computation that worked [I was successful burning], then deleting some files to make room, then adding a copy of videos. Failed again. From the first to the last, I changed my DMA on the primary IDE [I have two plus one secondary] by deleting the second primary IDE channel and rebooting as the setting for it seemed wrong; no change. BTW, my Advanced tab in all settings has nothing for Device 1, only for Device 0.

Now the strange part. It always crashes at 10 minutes 4 seconds from the start?? I have pasted below a few on the logs to see if this might add more information, or maybe others have had this same problem and have solved it. I have since learned that this post is too long so will add the other two logs separately. [This one is the first failure, the next post the second, and the third and last is a successful burn. Also, I have tried reducing the write speed down to 4X's which is the lowest available but regardless of where and when I change it [from the NEW setup to just before I burn], it always says 16Xs when it starts to burn?? Not sure.

Any help or direction you could give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to Windrivers StormRider

8:02:50 PM #25 CDR -600 File Writer.cpp, Line 302
Device not available
D: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B

In both your unsuccessful burns, your drive became unavailable.

I am puzzled by your use of the term computation... I don't want to make assumptions at this point, so could you please explain exactly what you mean?

Have you updated your motherboard drivers?

Can you describe you entire IDE configuration please?

stormrider

Sorry for the confusion in terms. What I meant to say was 'compilation', which is the term Nero uses to describe the setup on what you are doing, as I understand it. So I have three different ones set up, since I have about 12 gig to backup and want it on 3 separate DVDs.

I have not updated my motherboard drivers. My machine is ASUS 915P ATX Dual DDr PC-Express 1 16X 2 1X 3PCI Sata Raid Sound 100Lan motherboard. It was purchased 2 years ago from a computer outfit that puts together the components you choose. I have 2, 200 gig HDs, 1 80 gig HD, and one DVD/CD . The machine boots from one of the 200 gig drives.

Under Device Manager, the Disk drives are shows as: Maxtor 6 L080j4 SCSI Disk Device; ST3200822AS; ST3200822AS. Under DVD/CD-Rom there are two shown: GJ5211B MDV008R SCSI CdRom Device; HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B. Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, there are 5 shown: Intel 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2652; Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F; Primary IDE Channel; Primary IDE Channel; Secondary IDE Channel.

One final note. When I went into Computer Management to look at Disk Management, I noticed an additonal DVD listed as F drive [under Properties - General it shows GJ5211B MDV008R SCSI CdRom Device, Device type: DVD?CD-ROM drives, Manufacturer [Standard CD-ROM drives], Location Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0; Volumes it states CD-ROM 1 as disk and DVD (F:) as Type. I forgot all about this which is a virtual DVD installed from Daemon [which I did about a year ago to do some DVD testing]. Not sure what impact this might have??

I hope that is the information that might assist but if not, please let me know.

Thanks very much for helping with this because it is driving me crazy. I appreciate it.

Daemon tools can have some odd effects, especially if it has been partially uninstalled.

But I think the problem is with your motherboard drivers. Asus makes several boards with that chipset so here is the intel page instead (http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-011594.htm)

Or you can go to Asus and download the drivers based on the motherboard model number.

stormrider
February 2nd, 2007, 12:59 AM
Ok, thanks I will try that. I went to both sites and there appears to be a number of drivers you can download, both at Asus and Intel. So could you be a more specific as to which ones you think I should dl, or should I try upgrade everything that is available? [As an example Intel has drivers for the Graphics driver, Intel chipset software installation utility, and Intel Matrix storage technology. Asus has Audio, Bios, Bios-Utilities, Lan, RAID, Utilities, and Other.

And one last thing. If they are wrong for my machine, what will happen? Does the installer check and make sure it is right for the machine??

Thanks again.

OK, which motherboard do you have?

stormrider
February 3rd, 2007, 12:34 PM
Motherboard - Asus P5GD1.

My bios is 1006 and I understand the latest version is 1014. I have read a bit about flashing it but the directions all assume you have an a: drive which I do not. I do have a disc that came with the board from Asus that has a utility that allows for an option of updating the bios from a file on your HD. Haven't been able to find anything about this but assuming it must be ok if it comes from Asus?? A little worried about flashing it with some of the stories I have heard but maybe no choice now.

thanks again

Flashing of bios or firmware of any description carries a risk... if the power goes out when the file is being written, what ever is being written to is toast. Flashing from windows has come along way and is safer than it was... I flashed an intel board this afternoon from windows successfully. I have flashed from the hard drive having booted to dos when there was no floppy drive.

Check the text that comes with the bios update - if you are unaffected by the fixes the bios release is supposed to sort out, don't update.

The P5GD1 comes in 3 flavours. Let's hope you mean the vanilla one... this should be the right one (http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/inf6011002.zip)

I am somewhat puzzled about the arrangement of drives and controllers you have.
Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, there are 5 shown: Intel 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2652; Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F; Primary IDE Channel; Primary IDE Channel; Secondary IDE Channel.
You should have one Controller, one primary and one secondary ide entry.

Are you running windows xp 64bit or 32bit?

stormrider
February 3rd, 2007, 08:00 PM
First I am assuming I am running 32 bit because nothing says otherwise.

I am not sure of the controllers and primary secondary since the system creates them, but the configuration that I gave you is correct. Not sure if it makes a difference that one of the drives [could be two of them] is SATA.

Anyway, I thought the first thing I might try in the interim was uninstalling
Daemon because I don't have a current use for it, so just in case it might be causing the problems. Did that then tried burning again. Now it stopped very quickly after it started. I have pasted this log below. So what happened now?

Thanks

There are a number of causes of this..
You have version 7.0.1.4 - Nero is up to version 7.7
Time for an update I think here is how (http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/step-by-step-up.html)

OK, so I uninstalled Nero, reinstalled it, all after I flashed BIOS. I am now running the most recent version 1014. But still have problems as you can see by my latest long - and this one is different yet, although it has the same issue of resetting at exactly 10:04 after the start. Still don't understand that.

And, after the new BIOS, I now have 2 controllers and 2 primaries and 2 secondaries [added another secondary]. So now I am even more confused but no closer to being able to burn some ordinary data using Nero. Does this log tell you anything more??

You uninstalled nero and reinstalled, but did you get the newer version? Updates for nero are free.

OK, I finally updated Nero to 7.7.5.1 , ran the program and think I got the same results. So the motherboard drivers have been updated, Nero has been updated, the other software has been uninstalled, but still the issue.

I had also tried to simply straight copy a DVD and it seemed to have no problem until about 10 minutes into writing and then it locked. I was not able to get a log from this as it ended up freezing the machine and I had to hard reboot.

Here is the latest log. Any suggestions from here??

Thanks.

How much free disk space do you have on c: ?
Have you defragmented the drive recently?
Have you emptied your temp, tmp and temporary internet folders recently?
Have you changed the brand of media you are using?

stormrider
March 22nd, 2007, 01:09 PM
1. free space on drive c: = 80 gig
2. No, was never big into defrag as I have heard some drives crashing when doing so.
3. Yes
4. No. BUT - I have used the same DVD box [100 DVDs] for some time and didn't have a problem with them before. Now I have with everyone when trying to burn video backups, [but not with straight data]. Also, if it was the DVDs, why would they have burned say 5 months ago without problems?
I am using TDK DVD -R . I can't remember at this time the differences between -R and +R, but again it was working before with these. I thought TDX was a reasonable DVD, is that right?

NooNoo
March 22nd, 2007, 06:14 PM
Defragmenting used to be dangerous... not now... you should defrag the drive.

OK, you just added something to the mix... are you saying that burning a normal data dvd works fine? What are the "video" dvds you are trying to do? How big?

stormrider
March 23rd, 2007, 12:39 AM
Very small, like three files for about 1 gig total.

Ok, even so about defrag, but that shouldn't be the defining factor.

NooNoo
March 23rd, 2007, 07:13 AM
It can be if the nero cache is fragmented....

If you burn these 1 gig video files as data, you don't get a problem - is that correct?

It's just if you burn them as DVD video mpeg2?

stormrider
March 23rd, 2007, 10:50 AM
No, I do have a problem which is why I don't under, data is data to me. So if I had one DVD with word files, no problem being saved as data. But if I take the three video files [and yes I have tried changing the video files to three other files to see if that was the issue for some reason], it locks.

NooNoo
March 23rd, 2007, 11:49 AM
so are you burning them as a data dvd or a video dvd?

Data may be data to you, but how you ask Nero to treat your data results in different outcomes.

stormrider
March 24th, 2007, 12:12 AM
In exactly the same way. I simply drag the files I want over from Windows Explorer to Nero. I use the same setup, ie DVD-ROM [UDF/ISO].

Is there a problem there?

NooNoo
March 24th, 2007, 08:14 AM
The medium is still giving an error "KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR" on your last log. I was trying to find out if it was transcoding and therefore the file sizes change to a larger size. If your total disk is not more that 4GB, then that won't be it.

Everything you have logged keeps pointing to the media. You could try a firmware update to see if the drive can recognise the media better.

On your last log (and previous ones) the drivers list is somewhat short. Can you post the full list (it's the last thing on the log, I am assuming that the forum character limit is forcing you to remove the last few lines).

NooNoo
March 24th, 2007, 08:17 AM
Oh yeah and "DiskPeripheral : MAXTOR 6L080J4 A93. iteraid Port 4 ID 2 DMA: Off"

Are the video files on this drive? Why is DMA set off on this one?

stormrider
March 25th, 2007, 03:55 AM
No there was no cut off because of the forum. I have pasted everything from every log I have posted. I just looked at an earlier one, the first I think and it says:

As far as the drives, I am not sure. I have 3 HDs, 2 X 200 gig, and 1 X 80 gig. When I look at them it almost looks like they are being duplicated. I think only one is setup as a SATA drive, which is drive e: I have attached the screen shots to show what I mean.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for looking at this.

Sorry, realized I should have attached this screen shot as well to show the controllers.

There is something screwy with your disk drives... particularly the maxtor which is showing as a scsi drive when it is (in fact) an IDE drive.

Can you post a screenshot of your disk management? (right click my computer, select manage, select disk management from the left).

In addition download this (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html) and run a report for the motherboard and the drives...

Run everest, in the right pane click motherboard, then choose motherboard again, click report at the top and select quick report motherboard and choose plain text. From that post this bit
Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID
Motherboard Name

Now from the left pane, right click on storage and select quick report, text and post the entire report.

You didn't say whether these video files where on the 80 gig maxtor or not.

Odd... disk 1 and 2 (E and G) are set as dynamic drives. Move the files to the C: drive and then try and burn.

Can I also have the other info about the motherboard please?

Posted earlier but for some reason it did not seem to take, so this may be a repeat.

The information requested above is:
Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID 63-1401-000010-00101111-101305-I915$A0045001_BIOS DATE: 10/13/05 11:26:44 VER: 08.00.10
Motherboard Name Asus P5GD1

which drive do the video files reside on?

Any idea why you have the Maxtor udma off?
Any idea why the maxtor and one of the seagates are dynamic disks?

It kinda looks like you wanted to set up raid and kinda got lost...
Is the ide set to jbod or raid in the bios ?

Well I changed my drives around so each is on it's own controller, but by doing so I created a unique problem which I am not sure who to resolve. When I switched the cables on the Maxtor and the DVD the Maxtor is now showing as an IDE, [good], but the DVD is now showing as a SCSI. There is nothing in the BIOS that I could find what would suggest it should be SCSI or to emulate it.

I also upgraded the firmware.

I have just copied a DVD and it worked fine, no problems. Next I will attempt the other copy I was trying earlier but it looks like I have made some progress.

Any ideas why the DVD might be showing as a SCSI?? [it is connected with IDE cable].

Thanks,

I think XP has got thoroughly confused driver wise.

If you are not using raid, then you should set up the machine as follows

IDE drive - primary master - jumpered as single master or master without slave. Plugged into the end of the IDE cable. See page 4-14 of your motherboard manual to check the settings. In addition you should have bus mastering enabled (page 4-29) and the ite8212F controller set to IDE (page 4-26)

Ideally since you are not using raid you should convert the dynamic disks to basic (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309044) - but note that you must back up your drive first since it involves deleting the volume and reinstating it as basic.

DVD drive - secondary master - jumpered as master and plugged into the end of the IDE cable.

Now for the SATA drives - page 4-15 of the manual shows you how to set them up as IDE only - Configure SATA as Standard IDE should be set and Onboard IDE operate mode should be set to enhanced with enhanced mode support on left at the default setting (S-ATA)

Having got that lot right reinstall the Intel(R) software Installation Utility V6.2.1.1001 for Windows 2000/XP/2003 (http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=1&model=P5GD1) under the "other" + sign.

Then go to windows update.

Thanks very much for all your help, ... it's been a long trip. One last question. You suggest converting the dynamic drives to basic. Is there a reason for this as in better performance, more reliable, or ???

Thanks again

have a read here (http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windowsxp/howto-20.html) and note that XP does NOT provide fault tolerance.

In addition you get problems like this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236086)

In other words, if you don't need the dynamic capabilities because you are not running a raid array, don't give yourself the headache of when it all goes wrong!
