Good grief, I've tried everything to get the HP PrecisionScan Pro software to recognize the scanner. I'm using it as a USB connection, btw. First, had to wait 4 days to get the CD from HP, as they do NOT have the drivers on the HP website. Then, performed all troubleshooting suggestions I could find in the HP pages, Dell pages, ScanPro help pages, including deleting the USB entry from the registry. That took care of the system not recognizing the scanner.
The odd part is that I can use the HP ScanJet Copy program, so something is going on, communication-wise.
Winner that solves the dilemma for me gets handsful of my very own hair, FREE! I have PILES of it at this point, and very little of it is on my head, if you get me.

What OS are you using? I've heard that some USB scanners only work with Windows 98 for some strange reason that, apparently, only HP knows. If it is Win 98, and considering the the scanjet copy utility works, it shouldn't be a config problem--if so, it'd most likely show up in device manager as a conflict--also, check for unknown devices--if you have one, it's probably the scanner and you'll have to be sure and load the correct driver to allow windows to recognize it...I had to do this with my HP scanjet 5P. If there are no conflicts and windows does indeed see the scanner, uninstall and reinstall PrecisionScan and check the configuration through the program itself, which sounds like the most likely culprit. It's entirely possible that HP hasn't configured the Precision Scan software to work with a USB scanner in which case I'd really your feelings on this issue to them. If you just got the scanner, call HP up over the phone and ask them what the deal is if none of the above options work.

Hi Shadow,
I am using Win98, and have no unknown devices. I also <hopefully> have the right driver, as I got a replacement CD from HP and it says 6200Cse on it, so ...
Also did the system check thru the software-no dice. Am trying know the install with the scanner detached, and then will delete USB folder from registry, and reboot with scanner attached. I will also check and make sure there are no resource conflicts <d'oh!!> If that fails, I will suspect, as you did, the software does not support USB. Do you know if some other software might be enabled to use the scanner or does PrecisionPro have to be the right version for *anything* to work? I was hopping to go thru OmniPage to the scanner but had no luck.

Well, HP makes a couple of different programs to use with a scanner. In addition to precision scan, there's also deskscan and maybe even another. If precision pro doesn't work, try to see if deskscan works with your scanner. Other than that, try searching for freeware/shareware twain programs. i've never looked myself so i don't even know if they exist. If there's no conflicts in your device manager and the scanner works with the copy utility but not otherwise, i would anticipate the software program itself. Be sure to read the installation instructions throughly for the new software, oftentimes, you have to completely delete out the previous drivers if upgrading or it won't work right, or you may have to install in a certain order. if you browse the CD, You should see a readme file with instructions on setup. I would print this out and follow it exactly. then if the scanner still refuses to work, contact HP.

Circuit, humor me on this one.
Start your computer into safe mode, then go into the System Properties. You will likely find some things that are duplicate entries there that don't show up under the normal
boot system properties. Kill anything and everything that shows up more than once, and then kill everything related to your USB and scanner. Also make sure to kill ALL copies of anything listed more than once. When you reboot, Windows will reinstall them, of course, but it's worth the effort. Hopefully Microsoft fixed this bug in 2000. I had a similar problem like yours with a Microtek C6 that Windows mysteriously freaked out over and "lost". Doing the stuff above magically cured it, and some goofy USB modem problems. Good Luck

Thanks for all the great tips from you and Shadow. I need a day to get this all worked out and will report in.

Uninstall the scanjet. Reinstall and when it asks you to restart-DON'T. If you have to restart for any reason , unplug the USB connection, restart and then reconnect the USB after you have restarted.Good luck , this works for us!
