Can someone access your computer when it is off???

I was reading a magazine in Dr` office .It stated it was possible to access
if you are on router wide open to internet while computer was off, Since I am
connected through cable modem to router than to me I am wide open:eek: :wave:

Yes and no... like all things with a computer, it depends.

Few computers are actually switched off. The ones you can be sure are off have been turned off using the switch on the power supply or the power cord removed or have had the plug removed from the power.

The others are in a kind of standby state. If the bios/setup allows the machine to be woken up on certain events, then yes, someone can access your machine ASSUMING you have no firewall and they have already broken into your router. Wake up events for this would have to be "wake on lan" since your would be cracker would not be able touch the keyboard or plug in a usb device. Other events are wake on modem and on serial (com) port activity.

So if this article was written in the typical "let's scare the audience" journalistic style, it is based on truth and you should check your setup.

my bios to wake on lan. I am behind 2 routers one wireless with wep settings
I am using trend micro internet security and windows firewall. I was thinking about zone alarm. Any suggestions??

Think about it... how do you get into bios? How do you manipulate bios? He would have to get you to download a specially written program to do that, in which case you should feel complimented that your machine was chosen from millions...

All you have to do is disable the lan connection(s) in windows when you are not using your computer. No net connection... no problem.

DO NOT put another firewall on there. Trend has already turned off the windows firewall and replaced it with it's own. Two firewalls is asking for trouble. Trend allows you to lock out the internet in one click...assuming you haven't got a trojan on there designed specfically for turning firewalls off, that would be sufficient.

Actually, the Greys can do this by reading your hard drive directly since the stored data on your drive creates quantum bubbles in the 11th dimension of the space-time continuum. The Roswell Incident gave us a glimpse of this technology, but we have only realized its significance in the last 10-12 years. I expect your data is secure for perhaps another 5-7 years and will only be accessible by the NSA for most of the next decade.

Thanks, When You speak I know it`s right. Yes just a little, Reason why My
last harddrive would not boot windows I guess no start up files? I would see
splash screen of Bios But no windows. It would stop at boot at cdrom.
would not see harddrive. I would use Data lifeguard tools and it would read and check no bad sectors. Had to buy back programs to get it like I wanted it to be. Do not really care to do that in short time Programs need internet activation In a small window of time. Before I lost windows I had ran SFC/ scannow about two days later it failed to start So I suspect A cracker could beam on in and delete start up files again. But of course I did not have trend micro at the time I had NORTON Works:) :wave:

Highly unlikely you were cracked/hacked for the drive.. more likely a virus or other malicious software or just the FAT or Partition table got in a mess. An electrical spike or a discharge of static electricity from someone or thing ... the ide cable not quite connected just so... lots of ways that could have happened.

Thanks I was slightly in the dark on that subject. Awhile back I had loaded windows and did not enter password, My wireless was wide open. someone
in the area put a password on my computer. Slight upsetting effect. Set up
on wireless to wep all is :thumbs: Now that access is closed.The Normal
malware spyware crap to deal with, I feel a lot better:)
