So I know there is no longer any active support for Windows 98 in terms of new patches and fixes, but it is it now Hasta la vista, baby for live updates?

It's cute how Windows 98 SE with IE6 SPI is not recognized as a Microsoft Windows product and how it is suggested that one try the Microsoft MAC update site.

Hmm....that's not good at all. I still use Win98 and I too get that same page. Right now not a problem since I'm fully patched, but this must be some kind of temporary problem.

I was also going to do a format/fresh install next week. Guess I won't be until I find out the status of this.

If anyone has any official info from Bill&Co. please do post some links.

-----------

Update: Ok, strange as this may seem, I'm now able to access the Windows update page without a problem. It appears the problem is with the url "v4" vs. "v6". Your page address is v6. The page working properly has this address:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

This exact problem has also been brought up in this (http://help.lockergnome.com/general/Message-opening-Update-IE6-SP1-ftopict51445.html) thread which pinpoints the 2 different addresses as being the problem.

So as far as I can see, all is still well with win98 updates.

------------

Update #2: So much for that. I'm no longer able to connect to the proper update page. I'm getting the same page again as pictured above.

My posting regarding the address (v4 vs v6) is moot.

After trying for the last hour or so there's no doubt the problem is intermittent. I can still access the update page frequently though certainly not every attempt. I'm also assuming this can't be strictly related to 98 as the updates url is the same for all os's.

I noticed the v6, but normally there is a redirect that kicks in.

I will try again.....

It's like playing whack-a-mole! Can you hit the update server when it will accept a request for the V4 version.

Are you having any problems actually getting the updates themselves?

No. Once connected everything works fine.

The problem is getting the connection to the right server. It is kind of funny. You get one set of updates, reboot, and then you have to keep trying to get a connection to the V4 server.

Yeah I can imagine.

Good to hear it's still semi-functional at least, although it must be a royal pain having to sit and wait to get access to the page again and again.
