I have an external CD-RW DVD-ROM for a Sony Vaio laptop that runs through a firewire. (WinXP) It worked fine until yesterday and now I get code 10, cant open device. The device seems to be working fine. I uninstalled my drivers and then restarted the computer, but I still get a code 10. Where can I find drivers for it?

Also, could this have been caused by a hardware emulator??

Difficulties: no internet connection at home, Japanese OS

Thanks alot

Hardware emulator? such as a cdrom emulator?
like Alcohol 120%?

Yeah. A CD-ROM emulator made by Daemon Tools. That was the last program that I put on it before this happened...put it on about two weeks before this happened though...

Seen that a number of times.
Yet to see what the resolution is though.
Others may know.

Going back through the history at this site and doing a few googles makes me think I could be out of luck....:knife:

Uninstall Daemon tools and then run a repair install of windows. Get all the updates done again and then try connecting your external cdrw.

The other problem I have seen with code 10 is lack of power... is the cdrw separately powered?

thanks for the advice. i want to run a repair install, but because the said CD-ROM is the only CD-ROM I have and my windows back ups are on CD, Im out of luck there.

power doesnt seem to be a problem. its seperately powered... when i put a disk in, it sounds normal and the busy light comes on for a little while, but at the point where windows usually asks what you want to do with the media, the busy light turns off and nothing happens...

So autorun is working? If it was code 10, you wouldn't get this at all.... exactly what is the code 10 on? Is the 1394 firewire installed properly?

no, autorun is not working. my computer does nothing when a disc is inserted. the CD-ROM will spin around and make normal noises, but the computer wont do a thing. the firewire seems fine. the device checks out. the code 10 is on the drive.

You need to test the unit on another machine... It is possible that the drive is dying. When you have done that, we can be sure that the 6 million or so tricks for this are worth going through!
