Hello,

Ive just helped a mate upgrade his old pc with a new mobo.
The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-8VM800PMD-775. It boots up but will not detect any of the 2 ata hdd's that are connected to it.
It does detect the optical drives though.

Ive tried swapping the ide cable and also swapping over to the ide channel the optical drives were on.
I also unplugged everything but one drive in case it was lack of power but still no luck. Besides that the manual suggests a 300watt supply and this is a 350 anyway.

Any suggestions as to what the problem could be would be most welcome.

these drives worked fine on the old mobo. I tried with one drive only set as master and no luck. I also tried a 80 and a 40 ribbon cable but no luck.
Ive also done everything in the guide but still no luck.

are both IDE's enabled in bios?

Yes they are. ifI swap the optical drives over to the other ide they are detected so it doesnt appear to be anything wrong with the ide's. I thought maybe it had something to do with sata being enabled instead of ide but the bios shows
ide channel o master 0 slave
ide channel 1 master 1 slave and
2 master 3 master which I assume 2 and 3 are sata.

I managed to fix this. I swapped the jumper from master to CS and that did the trick. Now both drives are detected. Not sure why it wouldnt work as master, any ideas???

The cable you are using automatically sets the master and slave. Set both jumpers to cs. Most branded computers use this type of cable.
