I have two seperate servers with 20GB SCSI tape drives. One is an NT 4/SP5 server with Seagate Backup Exec 6.5. The other an NT 4/SP5 server with Backup Exec 7. Both servers are running Adaptec SCSI controllers with 4 hard drives and the tape drive attached. The problem I am experiencing is the drives may work once or even several times, then go offline. I have tried several different drivers for the tape drives, including the Backup exec certified ones. I have also tried different software (ie. Backup for WinNT). I thought this may be an issue with service pack 5, but I could not replicate the problem on a test machine with SP5 installed. Any ideas??

Have you tried setting up an "AT" command to run a scheduled backup for about a week? Just have you or the users remove the tape each day and make sure in your "AT" command you included the switch to create a backup log. If this runs fine that I doubt it is a hardware issue. Also you can download the Seagate Tape drive Diag for NT. Follow the instructions and run a few test backups in DOS outside of NT. THis will let you know if it is an NT issue :-)
Good luck.
P.S. I have had the same issues so I know.
Rick
