As you may have guessed I've got a Toshiba SD-R2212 in a Samsung V20 and it won't burn CD's - just suddenly stopped. Doesn't matter if it's Nero (6) Or Windows Media Player (11) - Goes through the whole 'preparing' process, but then won't burn!!! Been and got the latest firmware from Toshiba but it made no difference. Doesn't seem to matter what format the music is in either - won't burn anything. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP?!!! - 'Ok Tosh, got a Toshiba?' - yes (dammit!)

What about the latest Nero 6?
Have you updated that?

Nero creates a log each time, can you post yours please?

Tried to post the Nero log, but it's to long. Is there another way of posting it?
Also - I'm using the latest update of Nero 6 (according to their web site).

I note you were using a cdrw - can you try with a cdr?
Can you also try burning just one of those tracks?
Can you also try burning one track consisting of windows wav files?
Finally, can you burn a data cd?
I am wondering if this is a DRM problem.

Ok, sorry about the delay in getting back - had to purchase some more discs! Right, first off, the disc I used in the nero report was a CD-R (don't know why it came up CD-RW). I have also tried burning only WAV files but without any success. Both Nero and WMP go through the whole burn process - the lead in and lead out or finalizing the disc - but there is never anything on it!! Each of the files would appear to be being written, but there is always nothing there. I have also tried to burn vcd projects using Nero and Ulead Video Studio (8), but they all have the same outcome - everything appears to be working but there is never an end product any more. The drive will read and play cd's and DVD's it just won't burn them. By the way, what is DRM? (excuse my ignorance).

Digital Rights Management - what you can and can't do with certain music and video files.
Can you try that drive in another machine? It's beginning to sound like the drive is faulty, but before writing it off, it should be tested in another machine.

Hi, sorry about the delay in getting back. I wouldn't know how to test it in another machine - it came with the computer and I assumed it was in with the brickwork!! I've had a look at some other sights and this seems to be a common problem with this particular drive. Some have got it to burn again whilst others haven't. Toshiba's own sight is completely useless, giving no information or advice at all. It's just so damn frustrating because it will still do everything except burn any more!! Anyway thanks for all your help and advice, it has been appreciated.

I just had a thought - don't know if it'll make any difference. the drive letter assigned to my Toshiba was E, but when I installed the firmware update it was changed to D.

It may be part of the brickwork, but even a brick in a wall is replaceable with enough care!
Toshiba's site is very good, but you have a drive made by Toshiba for Samsung.... as well as the likes of HP. Those companies buy them at a very reduced price because Toshiba doesn't support them. The support is down to the laptop company. Is this laptop out of warranty?
The drive letter is assigned by the operating system. The fact that it changed "all by itself" is odd, but if you updated the firmware, the computer bios would have picked that up, bios would have reevaluated the hardware and the operating system would assign the next available drive letter.
