Welcome to Windrivers werm

It does sound like you have a tried most things... have you tried booting from this cd with a bootable cd such as an operating system disk?

Have you tried removing the drive from your system and trying it in another?

I think it's likely the drive died...

Do you have access to another machine with a cd burner? If so, you can download a bootable cd image, burn it to a cd and try it on the laptop...
download memtest86 (http://www.memtest.org/download/1.70/memtest86+-1.70.iso.zip) from http://memtest.org unzip it and burn it as an image. This will also test your ram if it boots!

Otherwise ask a friend if they have a bootable cd... you just want to see if it boots or not, not install anything.

That means you have a problem with your ram... this could prevent your drives working properly.

is there any remedy for this?

Usually replacing the ram, but it may mean there is a problem with the bios setup of the ram timings or it may be that there is a problem with the motherboard.
