Toshiba Sat A40 Dvd Not Playing - Help!!!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A40 with Windows XP and Media Player V.10
However, I just cannot playback DVD's!!! My system also shows that I have a Inter Video Decoder (IVIVIDEO.ax Ver 6.0.6.42) that is compatible.
Can SOMEBODY URGENTLY HELP ME Pleasssse!!

oops...4got 2mention that an error message keeps popping up on playing the DVD stating: "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings." i tried that (the icons and background becomes all big and blurred...well almost!). But no go. situation same.
Anybody can help me fix this thing? Or do I just have to trash my tablet?!
Please assist ...!

Windows Media player does not natively play dvds - it needs a codec which you have to pay for... alternatively go to www.videolan.org and download their free player!
