I have been experiencing the following problems:

- Prompted to chkdisk on each start up which does not complete but stalls the computer during process 2 of 3 requiring a hard reboot

- Defrag will not run unless I "run" chkdisk /f and in doing so I get the following message: : cannot check disk because the volume iin use by another process

- cannot restore or use last known configuration with out the process failing.

I would like to know how to locate all processes that are running that would cause this error while running chkdisk /f. I know I can look up all processes in the task manager but I don't know which of the processes are inhibiting me to chkdisk /f.

I would also like to know what the following means "correcting error in #0 for file 25" and why ithe processes of correcting said error causes my system to stall.

And finally I would like to know fix my sytem restore to be able to acutally restore to a previous date.

Please note these problems began after installation of stopzilla which during the process installed some AIM items

I would be interested in any manual fixes for these problems. Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome to Windrivers JKKrazy

Two things spring to mind, your hard drive is failing or you have a very nasty virus. Get your XP cd and boot from it and use the first repair option to go into recovery console. You should be able to run chkdsk /f /r from there.

If system restore is corrupt, there is nothing you can do with it other than disable it to wipe the corrupted files.

correcting error in #0 for file 25 This means it found an error in file 25 and is attempting to correct the problem. In computers, 0 is a valid number.

Thank you for your response I appreciate you taking the time to help me out - I do have a question for you tho' My dad actually built this computer and he and myself beta tested XP as he was a Microsoft distributer so basically what I am saying is I don't have that XP disc available to me - I was actually hoping I didn't have to do that - so is there anywhere or anyway I can acquire the components I need to fix this on the web or the microsoft site - I am so upset someone was able to bypass my securities on this machine as it is very well protected - and with that is there any reboot I can do or manual fix in the registery that can at least halt the virus if it in indeed infected? And is there a reliable and safe free scan program online I can use to see what is actually infecting my system?

Thanks again in advance for your help

Your dad should know that the beta is well over and that your version of XP is full of security holes. If you have not bought a licence for XP on that computer, and you don't wish to, then you should install one of the Linux distros instead of rendering yourself open to prosecution for theft.

Thanks again for your help and i am not using a beta version at this time I have a fully licensed and validated version of XP - But thank you for your concern in your advice in regards to the utilization of unlicensed software - You made mention of Linux distros - what is that I have heard of it but am not at all familiar with it. Is it available on line? Thanks again

Well if you have a fully licenced version, then you just need an xp cd of the right type. Your dad should be able to help with this.

www.linux.org has complete details. All distros are available on line for download as isos.

Hello there I know we have already talked about my problem with chkdisk and defrag and what I decided to do was let the chkdisk on start up run though hoping it was just working so hard it needed a lot of time to complete - and thankfully that is exactly what is was so I was in err when I said it hung up my computer - So now after the chkdisk completed I have been able to boot my system with out being prompted to chkdisk and I also attempted to execute all those things that were not working - so it seems this is what is happening now and need advice on how to proceed - My Defrag is working as we speak - I attempted the run application chkdisk /f and that still says the volume is in use by another process - and I am still unable to restore my system at any check points or undo my last restoration - but now it is actually running though the restore process and ends by saying is was able to restore when before it did not even go into the restoration pop up - with that I was wondering what I can do to fix the system restore program - Thank you again for your help

Chkdsk can ONLY run when windows is not running... if you are expecting chkdsk to work within windows, you are mistaken.

System restore files, as I said before, if they have corrupted, there is nothing you can do other than to stop system restore which automatically deletes the files., then turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Running a disk check from within Windows works, but if you choose the option to check for and recover system files and bad sectors, or run the utility from a command line you get an error. jk, anytime you have a drive-related problem, you should always run the drive mfg's diagnostics.
