Welcome to Windrivers parthibs
Before you plugged in your DVD, did you install the chipset drivers for your computer? Did you do all your windows updates?
There is no driver for an external optical drive. HP provide a firmware update here (http://h200003.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=de&prodNameId=3184619&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=1101877&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228) for the lightscribe operation, but that is not what you need right now.
Do you have speakers plugged in? Do you get any reaction from windows when you plug in the drive? Have you had device manager open when plugging in the drive? What happened?

What about windows updates? Do you have service pack 2 loaded and the 66 other updates?
it might be this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871233) even if you are unaware of using standby or hibernation.

There are no drivers required for this drive, but you need SP2 for your USB 2 ports to work correctly. See: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=1101461&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us
for more info.
