Man, this is really bothersome...

I have XP Pro. Every once in a while, my default pointer will turn to into http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1157/746056144_073ab267bc_o.gif. It continues to function just like it did before, though. When I go into my Control Panel and into the mouse functions, my Windows Default scheme looks like this:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1197/746056154_8f1e0cff9a_o.gif

It has the pointer all the way down to Handwriting, which is a pen, and then continues to the end.

If I choose another scheme from the drop down menu and go right back to the default, though, it's fine. I can hit apply and the pointer will go back to normal.

Am I hitting a button combination or something to make the scheme change? It's a really bizarre problem to me. Hopefully someone can help.

Open Mouse Properties under control panel, "Pointers" and set settings to windows default.
Yes, I know. But, I don't want to have to do this all the time... I want it to STAY default and for the cursors not to change IN default like it shows in the picture.

Do you have a mouse with more than two buttons and a scroll wheel? I have and it can do all kinds of annoying things if I manage to press the buttons wrongly - including turning on sticky keys which is very infuriating.

It's a two-button ps/2 optical microsoft mouse with a clickable scroll wheel.

ok I know this kb is not for your problem (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321122) exactly, but it does go through the settings to remove stuff that shouldn't be there. Give it a go.

I tried this. We'll see if it does it again. It's very sporadic. Thank you for now! :)

Problems with cursors can often be linked to mis-behaving software. Have you looked at the Event Viewer for application or system problems? Has your system ever tested positive for Comet Cursor?
