Cd-Rom Problem

I recently bought a used (brand new) computer from my friend who never used it but when i attempt to put an installation disk in or and CD_ROM it just do not load but i can click the d drive but there is nothing in it... btw it can play music cds and dvd but i cant install any programs via cd

is this some kind of block on the drive?
if so can ya help me out on how to unblock it..... thanks

Before I can suggest anything at all I need to know what Windows you are using and it would be very helpful to know what make and model of computer you have.

When you double click on the D drive, do you get any message up? If so, what is the exact message please?
