I really don't know where to begin with my problems. My system is Windows XP SP2. Computer is EMachine. Media Reader 8 in 1, which I'm not sure is there. When I click on Entertainment, there is nothing there at all; folder empty. I have no volume control at all either. I can hear my music play with Windows Media Player. RealTek AC '97 Audio Driver Version 5.10.0.5440. When I go to Control Panel and click on Sounds and Audio Devices and then click on Properties and then Volume Control on Sound Play Back; Sound Recording; Microsoft Gs Wavetable SWSynth. The message I get is Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe.
Things that I've tried to do to solve the problem is as follows: I think the driver for RealTek is there. I see it in my Add/Remove Programs. I've contacted Tech Support at EMachines. They sent me a URL to download RealTek again and that did not work. They told me to try it in Safe Mode and that did not help it. Same old thing nothing works except Media Player. I tried to go to my Add/Remove and reinstall from my Recovery Disk. When I did that, half way through reinstalling an error message popped up and said No ADI codec driver installed.
Please if you can help me, give instructions on beginner level. I'm beginning to believe that I will have to get an external hard drive and transfer all My Documents to it and reinstall every thing. Another problem is my Restore DVD is for XP1. My system has been upgraded to XP SP2.

Welcome to Windrivers Biker Chick
Your sound drivers are installed because you have sound... after you tried to install the driver on the URL provided by emachines, do you still get sound from Media Player?
I need to know exactly what model emachine you have to be more precise in helping you.
Emachines may have sent you the wrong URL which would account for the message that popped up.
Your restore DVD to XP sp1 is not a problem, assuming you have broadband, you can just download SP2 and install it again when you have done the restore... along with the 75 or so other updates you are going to need!
What do you want to do - try and fix the audio problem (and learn a good deal about your machine in the process) or just backup your stuff and restore the machine to factory default?

Thanks for the quick reply to my problem.
What I really want to do is get this problem fixed. I've been struggling with problem for about 2 months now. The Model # is T2862.

I tried so many things I honestly I can't remember if I had sound after trying the install from the URL emachines sent me or not. I do know that at one time I did not have sound, but something I did got my sound back. From a computer newsletter that I receive, they said to make sure that you had your multimedia set to automatically download updated codecs. I do.
I found this forum by just typing in ADI Driver on my search engine. I have been reading alot of others problems and decided to join this group and see if anyone could help me. I downloaded Everest from someone telling another person to do so and that is how I got this info for my own computer. One other thing, could you tell me how to copy and past in this forum. I had to write down the info from Everest and then type it in.
Thanks

OK here are the specs for your machine (http://www.e4me.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T2862) which matches what you have above.
But wonderful emachines have not posted any drivers for it... so now we go on a hunt at Intel. here are the support pages for your motherboard (http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845gvsr/index.htm)
here is the sound driver (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=1065&DwnldID=8198&strOSs=45&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Home%20Edition&lang=eng)
BUT before you do that, I want you to install the chipset drivers which are here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=1065&DwnldID=5492&strOSs=45&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Home%20Edition&lang=eng) Then reboot and then install the sound drivers. Once you have done that, post again with the results (good or bad or indifferent).

oooh goody, a blue screen of death otherwise known as the BSOD.
But everything works ok in safe mode with networking? If so, then it's a driver or software problem... could even be a virus.
Does the blue screen stay put until you turn off the machine? If it doesn't, go into safe mode and right click my computer and select properties then the advanced tab and click on the startup and recovery button. In the last 1/3 of the window, uncheck Automatically restart, apply and ok. Now boot to normal mode and let it BSOD in all it's glory.
The error message will be in capitals joined together by underscores. There will be numbers and if we are lucky a file name (xyzname.sys). Write the error message, the numbers and the file name down and post it here.

I'm in Safe Mode now. It's the only way I could post. When I try to boot normally it would boot OK, but then the blue screen would appear before I could do anything else. When the blue screen appeared all I could do was turn off the computer. This happened about 3 times before I finally went into Safe Mode, while in safe mode networking I can send post and receive mail.

I will not be able to attempt to download these till Tuesday of next week. I'm going out of town with grandson for a weekend of Racing Motorcycles. We'll be hiting the road tomorrow and back home Monday.

Sorry to keep bugging you NooNoo, but I keep remembering things I feel like I need to tell you about my problem.
First, let me say that I still had RealTek disabled. This morning I enabled it and got the BSOD again. I went back and disabled it and again and no problem again.
Second thing, When I tried to reinstall from my recovery disk the Chipsets first, everything went well with those. Then I tried to reinstall RealTek,about 3/4 way thru instalation, a error popped up and said "NO ADI CODEC DRIVER INSTALLED". I haven't a clue what happened to this Codec. I've tried to find it some place and can't seem to find it. While I was looking for it on Google was how I found this group.
I had a nice invitation from EMachines to go to DriverAgent.com and for $29.95 I would have instant acces to more than 96,261 device driver updates.:flames: Is an ADI Codec Driver a Microsoft driver or from some other company.

ADI is another driver - Soundmax. You seem to have some sort of driver soup... when you get back we will have a hunt around and see what's what.
As for driver agent and things like it, yes they work but they don't teach you anything and save you having to find drivers for yourself. Some people prefer to pay and be able to use the machine without thinking about it. Others want to know how to do it themselves. It's up to you which way you want to jump. :)

Hi NooNoo
I'm back and still needing help. My grandson gave me an external hard drive and I've saved My Docs. to it. Now I'm ready to try anything to try to get this computer fixed. I deleted RealTek from this computer, because after we downloaded it last time, I had to disable it because of the Blue Screen. I wanted to start again. Well! I tried to download from the post you sent and it shows downloading, but it does not. After download, I do a shutdown/restart and look in my add/remove and it is not there.
One of the things I need, I think (with this pea brain) is to try to get my [B]SndVol32[B] back. It's Microsoft. Since I downloaded RealTek and then deleted it I have no sound on Media Player. I have absoutely no clue what is going on with this computer. Hope you still have time to help.

While Noo Noo is cogitating, to get your sndvol32.exe back into Entertainment folder:
Go to C:\Windows\System32 and click on that and then find sndvol32.exe and Right Click on it and then 'create shortcut' and you will have a shortcut available at the bottom of the files list in that folder (system32).
Richt click the new shortcut, click 'cut', then exit that folder and go to Start, All programs, Accessories and Right click on Entertainment and then click Open and paste the shortcut you 'cut' there.
Right click on that shorcut and Rename it to sndvol32.exe. Exit.
edit: actually, Right click on that shorcut and Rename it to Volume Control (which is what you previously had).

I did a search and it came up with 3 sndvol32. If you're telling me to go to the registry I don't know how. I'm not knowledgable at all about the techie part of operating this computer. I'm just above a beginner. I know the basics about operating it and that is about it. OK, I tried. I went to RUN and typed in C:\Windows\System32, and could not see a sndvol32. I found Sound, and when I put the pointer over it said Device Driver. I'm scared to touch anything in that folder, if I'm not definite about it.

Go to C:\Windows\System32 (that is accessed through Windows Explorer, System32 is a folder in Windows folder which is listed under C:/.
Left click on the System32 folder and you should see a whole slew of stuff in the right hand panel - go through those until you find 'sndvol32.exe' and Right Click on it and then click 'create shortcut' and you will have a shortcut available at the bottom of the files list in that folder (System32).
Richt click the new shortcut, click 'copy', then exit that folder and go to your main screen (Desktop) and click Start, All Programs, Accessories and Right click on Entertainment and then click Open and paste the shortcut you 'copied' there.
Right click on that shorcut and Rename it to 'Volume Control' (which is what you previously had).
Now, that one should show in Entetainment.

So you need to look at that disk and find where the i386 folder is.
If it isn't in the main listing when you look at it, it must be in a sub folder.
Do a search on D: for i386.
Let's say you find it in a folder called 'drivers'.
Then add a directory line to accomodate the path you find, eg, instead of cd i386 you may have cd drivers\i386.
EDIT:
You can try this also, may be easier:
Start, run, type cmd and press enter
Type cd c:\windows\i386 and press enter
Type expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe and press enter
BTW: if you click start, all programs, accesories you will see Windows Explorer in that list - it is your most important Windows tool for working with files.

Its not about being touchy. It is about a online free help and support forum that is based around a member community of various specialized IT technicians and experts, not a singular entity.
"Waiting for NooNoo" and directing everyone to Noonoo also actively discourages other members from helping with issues and adding their two bits of experience and knowledge, which is what this board is about. Everyone helping.
If you feel any differently to this idea, you are quite free. I did spare a huge thought for the many other people around here quite capable and qualified to help this lady's issue and allow her to get up and running quickly and efficiently.
There is nothing touchy about my statement, unfortunately you chose to interpret and respond with your comments instead of perhaps seeing why I made the particular comment and accepted it. Don't get me wrong, your help around here is appreciated and well respected too.
Now can we get back to this ladies issue and help get her sound back, because theres some hella hilarious stuff she is missing on the internet without sound.

I'm going to start a new post because this one is geting so long. I think I have RealTek already on my computer but I have already tried to post my findings in this forum and it is so small no one can read it. It's pretty long so I don't know what to do about it. I cannot see Realtek in my Add/Remove programs but undoutably it is still on my computer and most of the things that I'm missing in Accessories-Entertainment. I uploaded my finding to a JPG on Photo Bucket. The only thing I know to do at this point is to e-mail it to Mayet at her hotmail addy and let her get it in a post for me. Thanks to all of you for trying to help me with my problem.

you can email it to me at that addy or margaret at south-burnett dot com ..
one other way is that you can post the image link without formatting it
if you just post the photobucket image address in the post it will act as a link and not display the whole picture. Members can then click the link to view the image
like http://www.rejectz.com/allkids.jpg .. :) thats my tribe on holiday travelling through the world famous daintree rainforest..
but you see it comes up as a link not an image.

continue with this one..
what you posted was able to be posted with cut and paste or copy and paste.
You drag your mouse over the test you want copied and then right click your mouse over it. A menu will popup and you scroll down to copy and left click
then you go to where you want to paste it, in this case the windrivers post and right click your mouse and scroll down to paste and left click. after a second your text should appear..sometimes some forums limit post sizes so you may find it doesnt accept the full text. in that case try half on one post, and then do another post and paste the rest

Hi
Is there no one here who is going to try to help me with this. I've noticed in this report that alot of the audio things are STOPPED. How do I get them back on Automatic? Or are these stopped becuse in the last 3 lines it says (Standard system devices) machine .inf Not Available?? If this (inf) is part of Windows, how can it recover it.

Firstly can you go to start run and type scf /scannow thats sfc space forwardslash scannow
that will restore any missing DLL's and system files before we go any further
and then can you go to windows updates and do all your available updates and check if there is any driver updates available for your system.. download them
and reboot
then can you check in Device Manager, System Devices that Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator is installed and running?
If not follow this below
search for machine.inf then copy to temp directory. remove
at about line 20 " ExcludeFromSelect=* "
goto control panel, add new hardware, next (let it seach), yes hardware
is connected, next, scroll to bottom, add new hardware device, next,
install from list, next, select system devices, next, select have disk,
point to amended copy of machine.inf in temp directory, scroll to "plug
and play software device emulator" in right hand column, next and
complete install.

I've already tried, before I contacted this group, to run the scannow. The system will not let me do that. Reason being, I guese, is my restore CD is for SP1 dnd I have updated this system to SP2 with no restore for SP2. When I try to run the scannow, my computer will stop and tell me to put in the restore CD, and when I do, it will not accept it. Says wrong disk, then my machine hangs up and I just have to turn off without shuting down.
Mentally I'm shot; right now I'm not able to do anything else on this computer I will try looking at your other suggestion tomorrow. Also, I have all the updates from Microsoft. I have been to site and checked to see if I needed and driver updates.

Hi Mayet
I don't really know how to tell if the Plug & Play Software Device Enumerator is installed and running or not. I looked at it and checked Properties. I did not see anything to make me think it is not running. You will have to tell me what to look for.

You can check Plug and Play:
Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and look for 'Plug and Play' - should be set for Automatic.
Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>System devices and RIGHT click Plug and Play Software Devioce Enumerator and click properties and it should say 'this device is working properly'.
:)
BTW: This site is where I would NORMALLY suggest you get your downloads:
That's the computer you said you had in post 3. However, it seems they don't have any support.
You do have access to the User manual which outlines how to use your restore cd to recover the system and drivers. At this point, since you have copied off the good stuff, I would suggest that tack.
If you want to continue trying to 'save' the situation, you were directed to Intel drivers earlier on that might do it- just need to try I guess.
gl anyway - :)

Yes my Plug and Play is running and on Automatic.
I have looked in the Windows Explorer (mind you I did not delete anything) just put my cursor on top of things looking at the things that showed for Realtek. I tried alot of the web sites you guys have suggested for downloading BEFORE I CONTACTED THIS FORUM. I think I downloaded things that I did not need to and also things that I did. Now I have stuff in my System 32 and other places for Realtek that has been installed on different dates. I was just downloading everything in sight, NOT KNOWING WHAT I WAS DOING. Do you think I ought to go into the system and delete anything that has Realtek on it and then try to reinstall??? MAYBE FROM MY RESTORE CD instead of going to sites. Do you think that all these different versions that I have attemped to download are what is causing the Blue Screen???? I don't know anything about working with FILES IN SYSTEM but when I put my cursor on top of the file and then click Properties I would know if it was Realtek or not. I have all My Documents and Web sites, to things I have on my desktop, saved to an External Hard Drive. So if this computer crashes I will have saved all my Pictures and Music on the External Hardrive. I wanted to make sure of that before I started messing to much with this thing. The only thing I don't have on external H D is my favorites and not sure about how to do that. I would like an opinion from any or all that would answer as to your opinion of what to do. My neighbor's grandson, (they said) is very knowledgable about computer, maybe I could get him to look at this computer. He works on their computer. I REALLY DO APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU TRYING TO HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. BE HONEST WITH ME AND ADVISE IF I SHOULD SEEK OUTSIDE HELP WITH MY PROBLEM. OR ARE YOU GUYS STILL WILLING TO TAKE YOUR VALUABLE TIME TO CONTINUE TO HELP "ME" FIX THIS. I'M REALLY GETING DEPRESSED WITH NOT GETING THIS TO WORK. ALL OPINIONS ARE WELCOME.

I/we need to know just how bad things are:
Click Start, Control Panel, Add/remove Programs:
What programs are shown that involve audio?
eg: if Realtek drivers are installed there should be an entry like 'RealTek High definition Audio Driver'.
Be sure to look for ALL audio entries.
Click Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Sound Video and Game Controllers and report all entries EXACTLY with the word 'Audio' in them.
With that info we might be able to clean up your sound stuff.
Like Mayet implied, you may have other issues with your install since you did lose that Sound Volume control earlier.

Ok
First: Create a new folder by Right clicking on your Desktop screen, left click new, then folder, then name the folder AC97.
Then go to this site Noo Noo gave you and download the audio driver to that folder.
Have a look inside and make sure there is an 'inf' file in there.
Then , go back into Device Manager, Sound Video and Audio Controllers and Right click on the 'Realtek AC97 Audio' entry, then left click on properties, left click on driver, left click on uninstall and click 'OK'.
Called away - anyway, at this point reboot and see what happens.
If asked for a driver, direct the search to the desktop folder. (in most cases, that means every time Windows asks you to let it go ahead and do something, you say no and take the harder road)

I went to the site, and I messed up; I guese. I clicked Run not SAVE and it did not ask me where I wanted to send it. It just started downloading. I don't think it made much difference though. I still don't have the driver. Then I went back to site and downloaded and did not run did a save and I saved it to the file I had made on desktop (AC97). I still cannot look for an inf file because all you can see when you open is an Install Shield to install.

When I clicked on Run it did not ask for a destination. It just started downloading. There was nothing I could do. Except Cancel (which I did not do) I thought I had made a big BooBoo. Most ask where you want to download to, this did not do that. I never had a choice. Then I did a Shutdown/Restart and then went to Control Panel..System Propertied...Device Manage...Hardware..Realtek AC'97 and it said no drivers installed for this device.
So I did the Save and then put it in a folder. You know the results there

No I cannot click "Up Date Drivers" through Audio Devices. I did as you instructed and do not have option at this location. Here's what I did:
Control Panel-Sound Video Game Controllers-Hardware-Properties, Location..PCI bus0, device 31, function 5...Troubleshoot..Install from disk
Control Panel-System-Hardware-Device Manager-Double click..Realtek..Driver Tab..See all kinds of drivers listed...Version 2.0.0.4----Click Update Driver-Clicked Install from spefic location..Don't search I will choose driver...choices
Realtek AC97 Audio Version 5.10.0.5440 1/9/2004
same as above.................5.10.0.6230 3/8/2007
same as above.................5.10.0.6240 4/25/2007
I clicked on the Version 6240 and got the BSOD after it appeared to start downloading....and got all kinds of error messages. I went back thru the steps so I could write it down to let you know what happened. It had the 5440 Version highlited to show that it was compatable. What is you opinion of trying for clicking on the 5440, which is the version that came on this computer and just see what happens. I contacted e-machines before I found this group and she sent me a website with the 5440 version. I tried it and it still did not work. Even tryed it in the Safe Mode as she advised and it still would not work.

Well, I think you have a mish-mash of drivers on there and it will be unlikely that you can remove them with my help. :)
If it were me, I would bake some cookies and ask that young lad next door to reload your system from scratch.
You have your good stuff saved - you should also copy off your favorites folder for inclusion later (just do a Start, Search and enter 'favorites' (check spelling may need a 'u'). Make a note of where that was located, click on the folder, copy and then paste to a cd.
I have run out of ideas here. Sorry and best of luck to ya.

The one thing that hasn't been checked... or at least I didn't see it yet was whether the audio service had been started.

Yes NooNoo is is working and set to Automatic and Running. This problem has me about ready to pull my hair out. I've got to get ready for church now. "Not know what I'm doing" I've still been in system looking for anything with Realtek on it and deleting hoping that if I delete all of Realtek system will allow me to download some Realtek version. Even tho I've done that and tried to download, it seems that something is always missing from the download. I get messages that some Dll is missing or something else. I've gone back to system and deleted all Realtek things that I can find and then try to download again and then same thing keeps happening some part of it does not download. Gees!!!! what a mess.

OK, we need a sanity check.
Did you download the driver that I posted on page one of this thread? If so, where did you save it?
Did you install the chipset drivers that I asked you to?
We are going to remove the previous drivers and install the new one, but one step at a time. I would like to see a screen shot of your device manager with the sound and mulitmedia bit expanded please.
downloads for your motherboard (http://emachine-upgraders.info/dir1/motherboards/socket478/D845GVSR_downloads.shtml) just to save me and you flicking through all the pages on this thread.

I've tried to copy and paste My Screen print screen into this post and it will not copy and paste it. I can insert a URL, Insert Picture, and copy and paste, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to put this print screen into this post.

You need to host it on a website first... I thought you used photobucket?
Then put the link to the picture in between img tags or click the picture icon (yellow, mountains, sun)

I do have site on photobucket. Problem being is how to get it there. I did it one time and don't I have to change it to BMP or JPG. If so, that is my problem doing it. I can save to my Doc. or Pic but can't seem to remember how to change it.

I did the things that you told me to do. Remember I got the BSOD. I've downloaded different sites I've personally did, other sited that others told me and when I found that site for eMachines, I even downloaded the one that is suppose to be for my machine.

I believe this will work for you:
In XP, you do a 'prt scr' then open Paint and click edit and then paste and then click Image, then 'Stretch/Skew' and enter 50 in both Stretch spaces (was 100) and then click file, save as and save it as whatever name you want AND specify jpeg.
Then just attach it here.

Thanks CCT
I did part like you said, but did not know about the stretch part. I just did the box that's in the top menu left side. And that is how I did it. It's alittle smaller that I had thought it would be. I hope that NooNoo will be able to read it. I can read but not easily. Anyway, I hope that I've given her the info that she wanted.
Gees! all you guys&gals have been so gracious with your time. THANKS

OK, it says no drivers are installed... so lets uninstall that device entirely in a minute....
You say that there are no entries for realtek in add/remove programs either... is there one for soundmax? In control panel, (switch to classic view - link on the left) look through the icons, is there a sound max icon (blue with white sideways triangle on it or blue with yellow circular pattern) or a realtek icon? http://www.embeddedlinks.com/chipdir/logo/realtek.gif
Thing is, there are two possible different sound devices for your machine. So before you do anything, go to the download page I put in my post (#78) above and download both the realtek and the sound max drivers. Do not run these files, save them...Create two directories - Save one in c:\realtek sound and save the other in c:\sound max sound.
Delete all the files you have downloaded and saved... to avoid confusion later. I think you have a fair few on your desktop from unpacking various files.
Now uninstall anything to do with realtek or sound max you can find in add/remove programs and then go to device manager and uninstall the realtek ac97 entry.
Leaving device manager open (you get to see it updating itself, it does no harm) Double click the soundmax file you downloaded and saved in c:\sound max sound. Follow the wizard. Post any messages you get.
If it fails, we will repeat the whole procedure above, except you will double click the realtek file you downloaded.
If neither of these works, we need to consider the possibility that the onboard sound has failed or a setting in bios/setup needs adjusting or we have got ourselves a complete driver minestrone and need to reload this machine.

I know I said that I did not have any Realtek in Add/Remove but I do, and it will not let me remove. I did a screen shot of what I got and hope you will be able to see and not be to small. I've tried to remove and can't. I ran a program to check for errors on computer and fix and I guese it put it back.
These are some things that are all set on Manual that I found don't know if this will be Helpful or not:
dmusic--Microsoft Syntheizer
srmkaud- MicrosottDMR Audio
smwdm
splitter--Audio splitter
Don't see any Sound Man Icon in Add Remove. Before problem started don't remember seeing any Sound Man Icon any where. Could have been there tho.
sumidi[not sure of spelling] Microsoft wavable Synth.

Still cannot remove Realtek from Add/Remove-Error message...Install Shield try again
Went to Device Manager and deleted it thinking that I could then uninstall it, could not.
Went to eMachine page for Realtek, downloaded, saved, and put in C:\ per you instructions.
No Sound Man in Add/remove or Control Panel to remove
Went to eMachine page and download, saved, and put it in C:\ per your instructions
Went to eMachine page and downloaded Chipset , saved to Drivers C:\ then I OPENED and INSTALLED.
While in C I looked at Drivers....Media Reader...Set Up Install Shield Software Corp. Do you think I should run this Installer, or do you think it is already installed and the installer is just in folder.
I have not attemped to install Realtek or Sound Man, because, your instructions were to unistall all Realtek and I can't. Is there another way to uninstall it other than using the ADD/REMOVE...........Instructions from NooNooNow uninstall anything to do with realtek or sound max you can find in add/remove programs and then go to device manager and uninstall the realtek ac97 entry.

Hey NooNoo
I'm geting the BSOD again. It could be system puting that Realtek back that I deleted in Device Manager-Hardware. I disabled it for the time being so I could get system back up and running. I have not RUN either sound programs Realtek Sound or Sound Man that I have in a folder so it has to be the one that I deleted causing it.
I will be going with grandson racing again this weekend and it will be Tuesday before I can do anything else on this crazy computer. I really need a break. Also I figure you need a break from me and my post .

One more thing. I said that I had to disable Realtek to keep from having the BSOD. I decided to try to delete it again while it was Disabled and it was a Successful Delete. Now I'm ready to try to download the other Realtek and Sound Man from the folder in my C: Drive. I will wait till I return Tuesday and have more time to work with it.

Hi NooNoo I'm home again from a good race weekend. No wins. We really did not expect any. He came in 6th in one race and 7h in another. He's racing with the real Pro's now. He's only been racing for 2 yrs. now. Some of those Pro's have 20 yrs experience.
When you have time, I'ed appreciate your continued help.
Now to the real problem or Realtek Problem I tried to let the computer download as you instructed me to do from Device Manager and it would ask for my disk. So, I went to the C: folder where I had saved and did the install. Well, my computer let it totally install and then I let it do a shut down/restart. As soon as it began to restart I would get the BSOD. I tried 3 times and everytime the BSOD would appear. I finally had to load in the Safe Mode and disable it so I would be able to boot up.
Here's alittle history about this computer. When it was given to me for Christmas 2 1/2 yrs ago, it had SP1 on it and was updated to SP2. Before it was updated to SP2 this computer got where it would turn it's self on and off constantly. Upgraded to SP2 and still the same old thing. Finally took it to a tech and he said it was the motherboard. A new one was installed, and he gave me a copy of the download disk. So I do have a copy of the SP2 on a disk.

For your reference - the T2882 model 'appears' to have the exact same specs as yours AND has the downloads available.
Might be worthwhile making a CD up with ALL the downloads they have there.

Hi
I want to start out with thanking all of you who tried so hard to help me with my problem. You guys sure are a great bunch of people. I truely think that you exhausted all your knowledge to try to help me without being here and touching my computer. I have learned alot about computers from you.
I finally had to take this computer to a tech. Everything you guys tried was correct. The tech tried to download Realtek and the same thing that was happening to me happened to him the BSOD. He was not able to download either. He finally came to the same conclusion that I had. We had to reformat this computer. He told me the problem was that Microsoft would not recognize the Realtek Driver. He said that there was some kind of glitch going on in the system. Even after reformatting, he could not get the sound card on my computer to work. He had to put another sound card in this computer.
 up to all of you.
I'll not be leaving this group now that I have sound. I've learned to much from you.

I'm relieved:) that this problem is fixed. Of course, just geting everything back and set-up again is a pain.
Working with all of you trying to fix my problem has sparked an interest for me to learn more about the working of this computer instead of just sending e-mail and doing web searches.
In my newspaper, there was an article about a program that is set up where old computers are donated and they are training teen and college kids to tear down, rebuild, learn web site design, and repair computers. Then, they will donate to needy people. I thought that this would be something that I would like to do. I've thought about contacting my local Community College to see if they have any program similar to this.

That sounds like a worthwhile idea. I hope you can find something like that.
