Files and Settings Transfer

I have XP Home and want to use my CD Drive (E:) to transfer Files and Settings to another computer having XP Professional. Using the Wizard I can only see Floppy or Removeable Drive (F:) options. Can anyone please tell me how I can use the CD Drive ?

Hi geriatrictechnophobe (I got to edmit I really like your nick),
There is an option to save the output into a designated folder ("other" and browse to a folder).

"save" the output files to a folder on the computer (preferably on a drive/partition other than your OS one). and later Burn the files on a cd (Or DVD if the capacity requires it).

On a side note - I never use this "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard", IMO when you have a new computer it is an excellent opportunity to start "fresh".

Thanks Gabriel for both your suggestion and also your side note. Your advice to re-consider using this function is appreciated. I only really want to transfer a few saved e-mails and my address book, other files can be copied and transferred without a problem.

If you are using Microsoft Outlook than it is quite easy - copy the PST file into the new machine and use it there. follow the instruction in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070

If you are using Outlook Express however it is a little bit more complicated - you have to locate the MBX files (if my memory servers me right) - follow instructions here - http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_move_my_outlook_express_folders_to_my_new _machine.html


The nick really is an honest description !! - I think I become geriatric slowly but surely - although I am only 30 in age - I am becoming increasingly forgetful, clumsy and very annoying - always makes remarks on everything (according to my friends... and wife).... At least I am still nice - which is well common "feature" of old persons :)

Are they not dbx files Gab? And the address book is in another location other then where you find the dbx files for outlook express.

For Clients I give them THIS (http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx) free software to backup outlook express.

Overall, I really couldn't improve on Gabriel's advice. The link he includes covers moving the address book as well as the mail folders, and it really is as simple as most backup programs for Outlook Express. No downloads or installations required. Yes, Kodiak, OE files are .dbx, but that doesn't matter in this context all that much.

What I've found interesting about this thread is that I'm not the only person who has never used XP's File and Settings transfer utility. Like Gabe, I always just copied the files the customer wanted and disregarded the other stuff.

The only exception has been some contract work I've done for Dell, where part of the job requirement was to use Intellimover for all transfers. BTW, it is a really nice utility, particularly if it is given to you.

I've wanted to try Vista's new and improved transfer utility, but so far, I haven't been able to. It only runs under Vista, XP, and W2K. So, if you're replacing a W9x computer, forget the MS utility. What an incredibly stupid decision by Microsoft! Sometimes you wonder if they are just looking for ways to make Vista adoption unpleasant!
