Here's a guess, but it's a weird thing that I ran into a couple of weeks ago. I was trying to install an Aiwa TD-8000 SCSI tape drive. The SCSI card was installed fine, and the tape drive was seen by the card. When Windows started it detected the new hardware, but Windows had no driver available. The tape drive remained an "unknown device" in device manager. I searched all over the internet for a driver but had no luck. Finally, I decided to run Microsoft Backup to see if it could see the tape drive. Couldn't find it on the start menu... "must not be installed" I thought to myself. I went to the control panel and checked the box to install the backup program. Then, on the reboot, "New hardware found", "Aiwa TD-8000". I checked device manager and, sure enough, there under tape drives was the Aiwa, shown to be working properly. Apparently there are tape drive drivers built-in to Win9x that aren't present unless Microsoft Backup is installed.

That was a long answer to a short question, but I hope it helps. http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif
