Hello-
I've tried searching for this but HP, MS no longer offer drivers for download for Win. 98. The disc that came with the printer offers drivers for 98SE and beyond. Any help as to how I can get this printer connected using Win 98?
Thanks.

Welcome to Windrivers maj14

Have you not got the cd that came with the printer?

You can try a driver for a similar printer like this one (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL1262/dj-7135-3/5550-enu-win9x_ME.exe)

the cd that came with the printer won't play because I am running Win 98 not 98SE. I was just hoping someone could point me in the right direction in connecting the printer to my PC with either another driver selection or some other link.
Thanks.

It will not work with 98... you need at least 98se. You could try any of the hp inkjet drivers that come with 98, they might provide limited basic printing.

For years it's ticked me off how HP felt the need to have seperate drivers for most, if not all of, their printers.
Well, they finally woke up.

edit: Sorry looks like even that may not work with Win98.
Give it a try anyway!

maj14, Windows 98 is essentially a 10 year old operating system. If you are running an original W98 box, it's on borrowed time and due to explode tomorrow. In fact, I have some doubts if your machine could meet the minimum hardware requirements for your printer even if you were running W98SE. Here (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/sm/WF06a/12144670-12144672-12144728-12144728-12144864-12144884.html) are the requirements. Page down as needed; the system requirements are about 2/3 down the page.

Sorry, but until you update this machine, you're just going to face more and more hurdles in terms of hardware and software compatibility as reliability. Even a decent used machine would be a better bet.

nice tip OMG. Except that HP didn't write drivers to support this printer under the original W98. So it doesn't matter what site maj14 visits to look for drivers.

The information is posted by people who, for the most part, are trying to help out, but unfortunately, their information is often outdated or just plain wrong. It is the one reason I never link to that site unless there is no other option.

OMG, the drivers on that site ARE the hp drivers... who else writes drivers for HP printers except HP???

err no, they provide 98SE drivers, not 98.

Yes OMG. They are 98se drivers. The poster requested 98 drivers.

See if you can find a 'safe' download site for one of the 5740 series printer drivers for Win 98.

If you can and it works, great!

If you cannot, time to dispose of the dinosaur.

:sigh: This is a generic message.

RTFM - you will find that it states 98SE
Read the first post of this thread - the CD will not run on 98.
And if that's not good enough read the pc requirements here (http://h20370.www2.hp.com/catalogo/nsc/cij_h/sp/C9017A.html)

98SE included upgraded USB suport included in tho OS = "built in browser components" over 98, HP Orig. drivers were 98. thus essecentualy upgrading 98's browser fixed the issue.
Really... and this browser upgrade fixed 98 so that it could support the wdm driver model? Amazing, so maybe you should correct these people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_98)

Noo, this guy goes into an ice cream parlor and says to the clerk, "Give me a gallon of vanilla, a gallon of strawberry, and a gallon of chocolate." The clerk replies, "I'm sorry sir, we're out of chocolate."

"OK," says the customer, "Give me a gallon of strawberry, a gallon of vanilla, and a half-gallon of chocolate." The clerk sighs, "Sir, we are out of chocolate."

"Fine then, just give me a gallon of vanilla, a gallon of strawberry, and a quart of chocolate!"

The clerk says, "Hey! Pal! Can you spell the "van" in vanilla?"

"Sure, v a n."

How about the "straw" in strawberry?"

"s t r a w."

"Good job! Now can you spell the "ef" in chocolate?"

"Wait, now," replies the customer, "there's no "ef" in chocolate."

"That's what I've been trying to tell you," shouts the clerk, "There aint no effin' chocolate!"

Haven't seen you in a while slave. Actually, this is a joke. When I compared OMG to genital herpes in another thread, that was an insult. Hope I've cleared up your confusion about the distinction.

Actually, what we have on this thread isn't a fixable issue because the Driver Fairy isn't going to provide a non-existent driver. Again, I certainly have some doubts about maj14's hardware suitability for his printer. If you feel the urge to spank someone, maybe you should look to OMG's ignorant, uninformed, and undeserved remarks toward NooNoo.
