MTP WPD Driver

Hi all. I am trying to plug in my (USB) Curtis 1gb MP3 player to my PC and upload some music to it. I have done it once before and it worked as it should, this was before I upgraded to WMP11. Now that I have WMP11 (a few months ago), Windows won't recognize my mp3 player. I keep getting the error "MTP WPD Driver has failed to start. Error 0x80042013." in the event viewer, 2 every minute while it tries to connect the device..

I have tried a certain registry fix described here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911091), but that didn't work. I have also tried to rollback WMP11 to an earlier version like it says here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlay er), but I don't have "Windows Media Format 11 Runtime" in my programs box.

It appears I have 3 options left:
- leave the music that is already on there, on there. :bor:
- format my computer so WinXP installs WMP9. :sad:
- go buy a new mp3 player that is compatible with WMP11. :knife:

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply NooNoo. The first tip, "Manually upgrade the dual-mode device to MTP" doesn't work. I have tried it a few times. And the second idea on that page, "Enable automatic driver upgrades for dual-mode devices" baffles me.
I'm not even sure what it is asking me to do lol.

And your second page tip (clear history and cache) didn't work aswell.

OMGmissinglink, musicmatch jukebox didn't work either.

The second idea is for those who do programming.

Curtis have a firmware upgrade here (http://www.curtisint.com/support/troubleShooting.asp) but I don't know if it's for your model. They also have email and phone numbers - you might want to give them a call and see if they have a fix.

Curtis was no help at all, it's a Windows issue, not theirs.
But I did find out how to fix it.

First open the Device Manager, click START, then RUN, type or paste this devmgmt.msc
click OK

Plug in your device, as soon as you see it show up in the Device Manager, you can unplug it.

Find your portable device in the right pane (probably has a yellow question mark beside it)

Right click the device and select 'Update Driver...'

When asked if windows can connect to the Internet to look for drivers select the 'no' option.
Then when asked, click 'install from a list or a specific location'
Then when asked, click on 'Don't search I will choose the driver to install'
Then select the 'Storage Device' option, then choose the 'USB Mass Storage Device', click 'next'.

From then on the device should show up as a USB storage device and not a MTP device (MP3 player).

I was having an issue with my Curtis MPS2015 being noticed as "hardware", but not as a "drive". I have searched ALL OVER THE INTERNET & found a lot of people having similar issues (most of them didn't get an answer or didn't post the answer they received). I tried everything I could think of & even some ideas that someone else suggested & nothing worked. It was recognized by the computer, just not in the way that I needed it to be recognized. The firmware upgrade didn't even notice it. My wife has the MPS1015 and has never had an issue hooking it up to this computer (I thought it might be some kind of conflict between her 1GB & my 2GB players). You did what no one else has really done. You posted your fix to the issue of it not being recognized. I tried your fix and everything worked after "Right click the device and select 'Update Driver...'", I couldn't get the computer to not reset hardware when I unplugged the device. It ended up being a relatively simple fix for an aggravating problem (isn't it always a simple, but overlooked thing?). Anyway, I wanted to come here and post a HUGE THANK YOU to you. You saved what little hair I have left from being completely pulled out, LOL. Seriously, thanks for posting your fix as it was also my fix....:)
