[RESOLVED] Upgrading to the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum???

Has anyone heard anything about the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum card?

Right now I have the Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 card and Klipsch speakers.

I have been trying to find a review on the Audigy card but have had no luck. Creative is selling the card right now on their website and its due to be in the stores next week. I would like to have a few reviews before I get the card.

I read a little bit of information on 3dsound.com and it sounds like its an upgrade but also a downgrade to the card that I have now. I really don't understand what they are talking about so if anyone can shed a light on the pros and cons of upgrading to this card I would greatly appreciate it appreciate it.

I mainly use my system for fun games, watch TV or DVD's and listen to music. And I have the hardware to handle the new card if is a better card.

I would say wait, if not indefinately, or just until the price goes down. I know how fun it is to be the first one on the block to have the cool new toy but I figure it's just not worth it for this one. The SB Live Platinum series sound cards is a great line and has been since it came out. Unfortunately, you can't push much more to speakers than is already being done. I would wait for more speaker improvements, as it seems you really have the best on the market at the time. I don't think you'll see much difference, if any at all, since you already have a pretty kick @$$ system. I just bought the Platinum Audigy. Me and a friend that works at a computer store near me tested the hell out of it. Sounds really good with a pair of Klisph speakers. You pretty much have total control of whatever you want to come through to your speakers. My only thing is that since I am running Windows XP, I didn't want to install it till I knew there was some input on if it would actually work with the OS without having to do some special configuration. I've just bought one of those today (along with my new GF3!) and I have to say, it's a trick piece of kit.

The remote and so on is worth the £153 I paid, by itself - but I'm just a gadget freak though!

What I am a bit peeved about, and I hope someone can help me out with this - the AudigyDrive's Optical Out port...

Right, you'd expect that if the light is on, then there is optical information being sent - well, not so apparently.

I have a sony minidisc recorder (MZR-50) and an optical cable, now - every time I try optical recording, the display on the MD just flashes 'No Signal' at me, even though the optical 'light' is on.

Now, this - on my PS2 - works fine, I can do perfect digital copies of audio cd's, or DVD movie themetunes, but not with the Audigy.

WHY??

I'm an avid fan of VisioSonic's PCDJ software, and I bought the Audigy with the sole intention of being able to do digital recordings of my mixes via the optical port, but this - alas - seems not to be. Can anyone help me out on this???

I might have found the solution to the optical problem (above)

What it is, is that by default the Audigy outputs optical data at 96khz, most optical equipment (my MD included) will not operate at such frequencies, and will refuse to accept that there is a signal.

The solution is to wind the SPDIF operating frequency to 44.1khz or 48khz (depending on the input equipment, higher is better)

This should then work. I've not tried it (as I'm at work) but I'll give it a bash when I'm back home.
