Greetings all-
I have here a Compaq Presario with an ESS1868 sound board in it (factory installed, i believe).

Windows sounds work great. A audio CD will play, but no sound comes out. I have changed the cable and checked all the volume settings, but no workee.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Al

Try plugging headphones into the headphone jack on the front of the CDROM drive to see if the drive is actually decoding the audio tracks. If it is, then its most likely a cabling problem or possibly drivers. Try plugging the audio cable into the AUX socket on the sound card if there is one or try turning the cable round (if it will fit the other way). Try re-installing the sound card drivers and also uninstall and reinstall Windows CD player, even if your not using it to listen to the CD audio....and if your not using Windows CD player...try it, see if it works. Also make sure that the CDROM volume slider is not muted. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/cwmsmilies/cwm16.gif

There is no noise coming from the headphone jack on the CD-ROM drive. Nor is there any sound coming from the headphones jack on the sound card.

Windows sounds are working fine, though.

Any other tips?

Al

If there is no sound coming out of the headphone jack on the front of the CD drive, then the drive itself is probably bad.

You might try swapping out that bad boy...they sure don't cost much anymore.

Good Luck!

Well,
After replacing the new sound cable back to the old one (which wasn't working before) the darn thing started working. Maybe it wasn't getting a good connection...

I don't know.

Thanks for the input everyone,

Al
