Hi there,
Recently installed XP SP3 on my Emachines 420 and noticed there was no sound. I looked in the Device Manager section under the Control Panel and noticed that:
- Realtek AC'97 Audio (This device cannot start - CODE 10)
Also I am receiving yellow question marks at the beside both:
- PCI Simple Communications Controller &
- Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
I am usually quite knowledgable with computers but not on this occasion it seems. Please could anyone give me any pointers and tell me what's needed to get this Sound problem sorted.
Cheers in advance anyone that helps.
Adam.

Welcome to Windrivers Adam
The pci simple communications controller is a modem
The video is your video card
Code 10 on your sound is probably due to not installing the chipset drivers first (but not necessarily)
Emachines have extensive driver downloads, the only problem is that I cannot identify which is yours since the model numbers differ. So here is the support site (http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html) perhaps you can identify the model with label on the rear.

Hi, Thanks to both of you..OMGmissinglink and NooNoo for your replies.
OMGmissinglink on the Desktop PC in question there is no internet so therefore I cannot get the updates sadly.
NooNoo thanks for the link to that website but that I struggled to find a matching "Emachines E420". I have scoured the internet and downloaded and installed a realtek driver 97 but to no use. It seemed to install fine and then I had to restart machine for it to take effect, computer turned back on but nothing changed. The driver didn't work, hense the [CODE 10.]
Sorry if I ""sound"" like I'm throwing your help back in your faces guys because I am NOT at all, I just getting a tad peesed with this damned driver nonsense.
Is there anything else I could do?
Again guys.......Cheers!

If you need to know which ones you need, download and install free home edition of everest here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html)

OK.... you want to be cagey... which is a pity because
the 420 is here (http://www.e4allupgraders.info/dir1/motherboards/socket478/imperial.shtml) BUT your readout says i865 springdale and not the 845 brookdale.
Which means we don't know who manufactured the board and drivers are going to be try it and see... not what you want.
So if you where the new motherboard was from, it would be a easier to help you if you told us.

NooNoo this is the Story.
My girlfriend gave me their old family computer and it was a bit knackered on XP Home Edition so I booted it with "XP SP3."
I am just about definite it is from Dell. I am unsure about fixes in the way of soft/hardware changes etcetcetc.
I wish I could give you more information NooNoo.

Right then, the motherboard info is lacking - there is a string of letters and numbers which is the bios identifier. Let's have that first.

Any time. Just remember not to describe it as an emachine 420 any more... other than to say that's the case it's in!

Here's my December post to finish off the year - Merry Xmas!
The Emachines 420 shipped with a TriGem IM845GL motherboard that was problemetic to say the least.
Many many people replaced it successfully with the ASRock P4I65G i865G Socket 478
