I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 using Windows 98 operating system. My computer is giving me a "data error reading drive C" message and I don't know how to fix the problem. Can you help me out???

Save everything that you can, as fast as you can, most important files first...

You can't take the risk, by the time you have finished testing, your drive may have died. Back up now then troubleshoot.

Welcome to Windrivers Carebear74...
I will merge this thread with your other one since it asks the same question.

Rarely is this a ribbon error. It may be. Either way DO NOT waste time.
As CeeBee said backup everything you want in the order of its importance.

Hey Carebear74, sounds like you need a second computer to get your data copied. Just how you do it depends on what resources you have available. If you have a friend with a USB hard drive adapter, that's the easiest way to connect the drive to another computer to copy data. Many times you can do this without even removing the drive, just disconnect the ribbon cable and power cable.

If you don't have a USB drive adapter available, you will probably need to remove the drive from your computer and connect it to another machine temporarily. If you're not sure how to do any of the above, please get back to us. Most likely the drive is failing, and you don't want to run it any more than absolutely necessary.
