Sounds like some file damage.
Best thing is to run a
chkdsk /r
Very good tutorial here.

nbabe, it would be helpful if you quoted the error message, but the most common cause and the fix can be found here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922379/en-us). This can happen if defrag is damaged or missing.
So, what else has been going on with your computer, and what kind of fixes have you tried?
nbabe
November 14th, 2008, 08:14 PM
Well, it wouldnt boot. After several unplugging replugging removing battery, removing video card(cause someone told me it might be taht) it restarted, but since then when it starts sometimes it doesnt completed the start up. What I mean is tahtthis computer had 3 log on. and it would never get to it(when the start up doesnt finishes) I would have to unplug replug open close a few times until it works all the way to it. those are the symptoms so far...

ok the exact message is disk defragmenter could not start,
Tried that checkdisk run and when the computer restarted it flashed for a brief moment a message and then continue to boot. all I ccould read was this computer has or hasnt RAW ...whatever something like that it was there for a second or two but it mentionned something about RAW files... hope that helps.

If you have the xp cd there is another method which will work.

used the xp dvd from gateway. It doesnt work. I pressed R for recovery at the beginning and it will only allow me to FULLY reinstall Xp.This is not at all what the steps on ur tutorial had. In fact I never got to that cmd page. Therefore I still cannot run checkdisk and defrag still doesnt want to run and when i start the computer as mentionned previously I always get that error message that tells me I got raw files and that autocheckcannot run on raw files...then is keeps on booting till my 3 log on...how can I at least for now get rid of that message at the beginning.
Then any other ideas to fix defrag?...what about in safe mode? would that work and if so how do we getin safe mode. I had ME edition before so with this Xp computer im not too at ease. thanks
nbabe
November 17th, 2008, 03:23 PM
ok i tried to run safe mode which i learned is f8 ...it offered me windows or xp..tried xp and it told me it had a problem. then i restarted the computer again in safe mode and tried the second option windows(default) and all it did was to bring to a black page with safe mode written on it and nothing else...there was nothing i could click or see or do...had to closed it manually. so im still stuck with that message of autocheck cannot run on raw files and defrag still won work
NooNoo
November 17th, 2008, 03:24 PM
Safe mode you can get to 3 ways
1. batter the f8 key before you see the windows screen
2. start, run, msconfig click on the boot tab and check the box (remember to uncheck it when you are done)
3. turn the machine off half way through booting and next time you turn it on, it will moan it couldn't start correctly and offer you safe mode.
You could always download a 3rd party defragger...
nbabe
November 17th, 2008, 03:28 PM
yeah i did that. the f8 thingy.
but it did not give me a page just a black screen with nothing to do on it.once u click f8 i had to choose safemode which i did the nit offered me xp or windows(default) tried both with not success.
Right now Id be happy if I could get rid of that friggin message of autocheck cannot perform on raw files which happened after I tried what Feret told me to do in cmd. since it would nt perform the ckdsk then I guess this mesage always appears. If at least I could get rid of it then that be one problem less
NooNoo
November 17th, 2008, 03:36 PM
Why are you running chkdsk on an unformatted hard drive? Or is it on a usb flash drive?
nbabe
November 17th, 2008, 03:41 PM
I dunno... Ifollowed the steps that Feret sent me (see a prior message)...
SO how then do i get rid of that command so it stops showing whne I boot?
Ok tried in safe mode (ur second options did work BTW) and defrag still wont work I still get defrag wont start message error.

Is the in CMD a way to cancel then that chdsk command i made with FERRIT...this im sure is where that message autochekdisk raw files messsage is from...

NooNoo
November 17th, 2008, 03:49 PM
So you have one single drive called c: ?
The fact that chkdsk sees RAW filing system tells me there is something very wrong with your disk drive. It might be a screwed up partition, bad blocks or something else.
BACK UP YOUR DATA NOW
nbabe
November 17th, 2008, 03:51 PM
ok yeah i only have ac drive.
I did back up my data to a portable disk earlier this week when I started to get those problem.
But if ur asking me to back up on here...im not sure how to do that...not that great with computers.

November 17th, 2008, 03:52 PM

Do you have any usb thumb/pen/flash drives attached?
nbabe
November 17th, 2008, 03:56 PM
i saved most of my documents to a portable hard drive ...which is not attached at the moment. I did install last week a cdrw from my old computer since the one on this one stopped working...Might it have all cause these problems? because i did check to make sure all was working for a few times...I think the next day or so i started to have the opening problem(which seems to be solved now) but now of my 3 problems one seems to be cause by me with that ckdisk command prompt i did in CMD....and defrag well still wont open
NooNoo
November 17th, 2008, 04:00 PM
They are all linked to a hard drive problem.
Make sure you have a copy of the rest of your documents etc.
Oh wait, do you have a blank cdrw in the cdrw drive?
What make and model is the hard drive?
www.belarc.com has a free download that will show you a report of all your hardware or you can look in device manager under disk drives and the model number is usually shown.

If you can't reach certain sites, you have either got some virus or spyware. What antivirus do you use? What anti-spyware have you run recently? Try an on-line scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com. If you can't reach that site, you would be better off copying off your data and using the gateway recovery disks to set the computer back to factory condition. You would have to reinstall any programs you have installed since you got the PC.
Here is the knowledge base article.
Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe starts when you try to shut down or restart your computer

SYMPTOMS
When you try to shut down, restart, or start your computer, the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program may start automatically and start to scan your hard disks. This issue occurs without any user interaction.
CAUSE
This issue occurs if any one of the following conditions are true:
• You have scheduled the Chkdsk.exe program or the Autochk.exe program to run in Scheduled Tasks.
• A Windows registry setting has been set to run the Autochk.exe program at startup.
• Your hard disk is damaged and must be repaired.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Remove the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program from Scheduled Tasks
Follow these steps to remove the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program from the list of scheduled tasks in the Scheduled Tasks feature.
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
2. Click either Chkdsk or Autochk in the list of scheduled tasks.
3. Under Folder Tasks, click Delete this item.
Method 2: Check the Session Manager registry entry
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\BootExecute
3. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
4. Type autocheck autochk *, and then press ENTER.
Method 3: Confirm that your hard disk or your file system is not damaged
To confirm that your hard disk or your file system is not damaged, start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, load Microsoft Recovery Console, and then use the chkdsk command-line command.
Note To start your computer from the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM, your CD-ROM or your DVD-ROM drive must be configured to do so. For information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or the DVD-ROM drive, see the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact the computer manufacturer.
Important Microsoft recommends that only advanced users or administrators use the Recovery Console. You must know the Administrator password to use the Recovery Console. For additional information about how to use the Chkdsk command-line command to check and to repair a damaged hard disk, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
314058 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/) Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console
307654 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/) HOW TO: Install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
Note If the Chkdsk.exe program reports that it cannot access your hard disk, you may be experiencing a hardware failure. Examine all the cable connections and jumper settings on your hard disk. Contact a computer repair professional or the manufacturer of your computer for more assistance.
If the Chkdsk.exe program reports that it cannot fix all the hard-disk problems, your file system or your Master Boot Record (MBR) may be damaged, or it may no longer be accessible. Try appropriate Recovery Console commands such as fixmbr and fixboot, contact a data recovery service, or repartition and reformat your hard disk.

Check the HOST file to see if there are entries to block those sites. They will usually add them lower down on the host file so it shows the legitimate 127.0.0.1 localhost
If you select page down on the keyboard and it shows a bunch of entries then you need to clean those entries from the host file.

The HOST file is found in the windows system32 drivers etc directory.
Double click my computer
double click c: drive
double click windows
double click system32
double click Drivers
double click ETC
RIGHT Click HOST
edit
If it has a scroll bar on the right slide it down and see if any entries are showing.
Some virus's put entries to every known anti virus site in the host file which prevents you from getting to their sites.

http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/pattern/lpt661.zip
Creat a folder called sysclean and download sysclean.com into the folder and then download the lpt661.zip and extract it in that folder as well.
Then double click the sysclean.com file and it will start the offline virus scan engine.

Then you are back to backing up your data and then restoring your machine to factory settings.

you don't get an option, you simply tap the "y" key and then press enter if necessary.

nbabe, you've obviously got a severely infested computer, and I think you're much better off just to back up any files you want to keep, then wipe the drive and reload everything. Frankly, with the help you've been given already, if it isn't clean now, I don't think you are going to get it clean short of hiring a pro, and odds are good that he's likely to go the wipe and reload route anyway. I do stuff like this for a living, and sometimes you just have to cut your losses and go on.
