I have a hp pavilion a1328x desktop computer using windows xp and i seem to have lost my recovery cd. Is there anyway to reinstall my sound drives without a recovery disc? whenever i open up media player it tells me "cannot play back audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding." the windows media player error code is Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

This should be the info you need to resolve the audio issue

Why do HP do that? They don't post the audio driver - I suppose because this one will get updated by Windows update....and therein can lie the problem.
Try going into device manager and rolling back the driver. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283657)
If not right click and save target as here (ftp://202.65.194.211/pc/audio/WDM_R210.exe) for the Realtek drivers for your ALC883 audio

OMG that is the wrong file, the realtek needed is ALC 883 not the 861 you posted.
