"Setup program cann't find match Realtek HD Audio Inf file!"

Hi!

My computer used to be normal untill a few weeks ago when my sound just stopped working for what seemed like no reason at all!! My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A100 and was upgraded to Vista. The volume is at full blast and i checked to make sure its not muted. I plugged in some earphones to see if they work and got nothing. I thought there might be a problem with the sound driver so I downloaded the Realtek Audio Driver from the Toshiba Support website and tried to set it up but a message popped up and said "Setup program cann't find match Realtek HD Audio Inf file!". I clicked "ok" and another window said "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure!!". :confused:

I just want my sound back! What other information do you need to figure out what the problem is? Any help is appreciated...please?????

Thank you NooNoo. Yes, Windows update automatically installed SP1. But that was done a long time ago and my sound was working fine untill recently.

Can you confirm that this is the driver (http://support.toshiba.ca/support/Download/files_Downloads/psaa5c/vista/Realtek-Audio-Driver.zip) you installed?

Please list what steps you took to install the driver. It could be that windows update put a different driver in and you need to roll it back.

Yes, that's the driver.

At first I saved all the files into a folder on my Desktop and then clicked on the setup file, but that didn't work.

Then I noticed that the folder was zipped so I extracted all the files into another folder on my desktop and tried to install it again. That didn't work either.

I did this several times, deleting the files and downloading them again. I even tried uninstalling the old Realtek and then installing the new one but that didnt work either.

Here's some more info that may or may not help:

On the day that my sound died, my brother was using my laptop to watch a video. He used a pair of headphones to hear the sound and he claims that while the video was playing he heard a pop sound and could smell something burning. Afraid that the laptop had overheated, he shut it down immediately and turned it back on after some time. Everything was working fine except the sound.

Now, I wasn't there so I can't vouch that the burning smell was actually coming from my laptop. For all I know, my brother could have imagined it. But thats his story and I thought I'd share it.

Then I would take it to a repair shop. I have seen people who didn't know the laptop very well attempt to plug the power in when the battery ran out, and tried to plug it into one of the sound jacks... you get a pop, you get a burning smell... you are lucky that it only blew the sound card.

Have you looked in device manager, does the sound device show up under sound?

Yes, "High Definition Audio Device" shows up under "Sound, video and game controllers".
I clicked on properties and under the 'General' tab it says "This device is working properly".
I scanned for hardware changes and nothing came up so I figured the hardware was ok. Are you sure that the sound card may have blown out? Is there some way I could take a look at it myself to confirm that it is the sound card before I take it to the repair shop?

This is very difficult to diagnose with just text descriptions.
On one hand I can think of a few reasons why software prevents the sound output and on the other, I see the scary story -pop and burning smell....
It is very possible that the sound device identifies itself and the driver remains installed yet there is no sound... because the chip that does the output is not necessarily the chip that identifies the sound.

Let's go back to basics. Have you checked the speaker configuration settings? If you have the wrong one, it won't out put the sound.

Try pressing FN+ESC to see if the volume mute is disabled

I keep checking that over and over again...the volume mute is definitely off.

Noonoo, as far as the speaker configuration settings go, how do I check to see if I have the right one?

Thank you for the link, OMGmissinglink. The sound driver was finally installed without errors. There's just one problem...I still don't have any sound :sad: Once again, any help appreciated...

I pressed test - no sound.
I played around with the settings and then pressed test - still no sound.
I can't find the "X" either.
How do I correct the sound output settings?

Oh ok!!! Yeah the blinking happened without any X's so I guess thats a good thing. The speaker configuration is set to stereo. What's weird though is that its inactive... It doesn't let me click on it so I can't change it.

under advanced setting in that section the lappys main speaker could of been switched to output to headphones, thus you have to go into the configuration and tinker abit.


Would't that mean that I would at least get some sound on my headphones? Cos my headphones aren't working either...

Not necessarily. You might have the wrong speakers selected.

You should have something similar to this in control panel, sound. You need hi definition speakers selected.... What do you have in your list?

I can't press the set default button. Its inactive.

I see the button but I can't click on it. Its greyed out...dead...inactive...

And what do you mean when you say it passed the speaker test? Cos I've been pressing the "Auto test" button and the speakers in the picture are blinking but no sound is coming out. And I can't click on the drop down list under speaker configuration because its greyed out. And so is the "Set Default Device" button...its greyed out too. That's why I can't click on it. I tried but nothing happened.

Do you know what causes those buttons to become inactive?

If it still won't work, can you back up all your data and then run the factory restore?
