well this is how it started, originally i was on windows xp pro but when i heard of vista i decided, hey lets try that out.... after a month or two i decided that i missed xp since it was more user friendly and my computer seemed to run faster on it, thinking this i decided to reinstall windows xp, this is where i went wrong....
everything worked fine until i tried to connect to the internet.. i was puzzled why it wasnt working so i decided to check on device manager i scroll down and notice other devices has a yellow question mark beside it so i expand it and i find, ethernet controller and various other items with a yellow questionmark. i cannot get onto the internet , atm im using a different computer.
i have a compaq presario sr1629uk
and with aida i managed to find under pci, pnp network an item named via vt6105m/lom rhine ||| 10/100 mbps fast ethernet controller
anyone have any ideas what i should do?

Welcome to Windrivers Clark.
Your PC is fine, it just needs some drivers. Compaq is now part of HP. so all your drivers are here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&lang=en&product=1815540)
If you scroll down to the original drivers section you want the Fall 2005 Original Intel LAN Drivers.
I am a little concerned because your compaq is Intel based but you have posted Via details. Now it might be that Windows has misidentified the item... so before you install the LAN drivers, you should install the chipset drivers just below it.
It is also possible that you have a separate ethernet card which is Via based, or you have not got the right model number... or the motherboard for the compaq was replaced at some point.
If you download each of the fall drivers and install them, you can then post what is left over in your device manager with ! or ? next to them and I'll help you correct those one at a time.

ok, go into device manager, and find the ethernet controller that has a ! or ? next to it. double click on the device, then click on the driver tab. Now choose update (or if grayed out install) driver button. Click next, it will then give you a browse button for it to search in a specific location. Browse to the c:\hp\drivers\lan folder and select it and choose next. XP will now search that location for the driver (as well as other locations).

ok what's in the intel_lan folder?
By the looks of things you have extensions for known file types switched off... so you need to change that by going into my computer... click on tools then folder options then the view tab, uncheck the "hide extensions for known file types" and just above while we are installing drivers, click the round (radio) button show hidden files and folders. Click apply and now list what is in the folders please.

same thing happens when try to install, nothing changed in the lan folder, in the intel folder i have setup information, precompiled setup information, security catalog, system files, din files, infcache.1, prounstl.exe
The file XP needs is in the C:\HP\Drivers\LAN\Intel_LAN folder. One thing the driver installation instructions said was that you need at least XP service pack 1 to be able to install these drivers.
When you put xp back on did you use the recovery cds or did you recover from the hard drive (see page 5 here (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00494247.pdf)
Did you create the recovery disks?
Right click my computer, select properties, near the top of the general tab, it will tell you the service pack level.
clark m
January 19th, 2009, 05:25 AM
ahhh, im using service pack 2, how do i get service pack 1?
NooNoo
January 19th, 2009, 05:29 AM
no, service pack 2 is better! so that's not the problem.
Please delete the unknown device that you think is ethernet controller (lan card) and restart the machine, when the hardware wizard launches, browse it to the lan folder again and see if it finds what it wants then.

Found the intel all in one driver here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=999&DwnldID=4275&strOSs=45&OSFullName=Windows* XP Home Edition&lang=eng) click the download word in blue part way down on the right, then scroll down through the terms and click accept then click on Network Adapter Drivers for Windows* 2000, Windows* XP, and Windows Server* 2003 and then click the little blue bar at the top to download and then save where you can find it easily on your machine. Once downloaded, double click the file and follow the wizard.

Right... then you are not using the onboard lan that came with the machine - the onboard lan socket is usually just above the back usb ports on the upper half of the machine... is that where it's plugged in?
Either way try this via driver (http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1190&SubCatID=128) (Thanks CCT) and see if that solves the problem. If it is plugged in over the usb ports, then it's possible that compaq/hp have just posted the wrong specifications and drivers.

ok ill give that a go do i need to download all of them on that page or just the top 1?
NooNoo
January 19th, 2009, 06:37 AM
Just the top one... the others are older or for different Via chips

NooNoo
January 19th, 2009, 06:44 AM
heheh so does CCT.... thing is, it is very rare for hp to post the wrong driver, so I am more likely to believe what HP says.
Would you please look at where the ethernet cable plugs into the back of your computer and post where it is? You might have the onboard one just turned off and are using a separate card.
clark m

the ethernet cabe port is just underneath the usb ports
NooNoo

Fair enough, I reported the wrong driver to hp on their feedback for the download.
