Hey everyone, I'm new to these forums just came across here today. I'm somewhat computer literate but I have come across a problem which I can not solve so i turn to the experts.
Here goes: I HAVE NO SOUND. Under device manager in the sounds subcategory I have a yellow '!' next to the multimedia audio controller.
In control panel under the 'sounds' category i have 'no audio device'
My machine:
Manufacturer : Powered By AMIT
Mainboard : Asus CUSL2-C
Chipset : Intel i815E/EP
Processor : Intel Pentium III EB @ 866 MHz
Physical Memory : 384 MB (3 x 128 SDRAM )
Video Card : RADEON 9500 PRO / 9700
Hard Disk : ST3802110A (80 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621
Monitor Type : SONY - 16 inches
Network Card : Winbond Electronics Corp W89C940 NE2000-Compatible Ethernet Adapter
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.01.2600 Service Pack 2
DirectX : Version 9.0c (May 2005)
Audio device:
Device Audio : ES1370 AudioPCI
This info is from PC wizard so I assume it is accurate.
I have the onboard audio controller turned off in the Bios.
Additional information about the card:
creative 5507
5507000101
T N8D 0779 TW
9815 HKG
C139898 SBPCI 128 9831
This info i got off the card itself.
I've tried to find the driver on the winxp cd to no avail. I've also downloaded several drivers from driverguide.com, but either I can't find the right one or I'm doing something wrong or in the wrong order. The driver file i found on the above website is es1370wdm.
Appreciate any help I can get.

Welcome to Windrivers LedZepellin1984
Have you been to Creative Support - They have the drivers here (http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=207&prodID=1864&prodName=Sound Blaster PCI 128&subCatName=Others&CatName=Sound+Blaster)
They also have an autoupdate at the bottom of the page.
Before you do this though, please uninstall the previous drivers you have downloaded from add/remove programs as you may have the wrong versions which will upset the install of the correct version.
If this driver doesn't work please look at the card again, in the top right hand corner should be a number starting CT or SB or possibly EN. Please post that number.
It is quite possible that the SB128 you have came from an OEM machine like a Dell or HP... in which case you need to find out which machine it was removed from to ensure you get the right driver. If you bought it from a shop, it could be the Creative OEM version which has no support from Creative... in other words, lose the CD and you have to find someone with the same card and borrow their drivers.
Let me know how it goes.

Welcome to Windrivers GRS
This is a Linux (BEOS) Driver, but thank you anyway.

Ok. I've tried the creative website auto update but I had no luck. I also tried the manual way with the web driver update. I get an error saying 'setup could not detect any sound blaster audio card on your system' I have tried this with both the AC '97 audio controller on 'auto' and on 'disabled' in the bios.
The number off the card, if its the right one, SB PCI 128 9831, one of the chips on the card also has the creative label engraved on it.
Not sure if this will help at all but every time my computer starts up the wizard pops up and recognizes that i have 'new hardware' to install. So I speculate that I don't know how to uninstall the previous drivers that are installed correctly (there was nothing in the add/remove programs in control panel that involved drivers.) Thankyou for the help so far.

OK the number I am looking for is two letters followed by 4 numbers at the top right hand corner of the card.
The Creative drivers lack of recognition could be one of two things, the card is the OEM version and so won't be recognised or the card is faulty (this happens alot with these cards).
You didn't answer the question about where it came from...

Rather than link directly to the file GRS, you would be better linking to the page on which the download link appears.

I've looked at the card again but I can not find the number you are looking for. The top right hand corner has 3 (quad silver wire inputs encased in black shells with L and R labeled on top of each of them) inputs 'cd audio in' 'tv tuner' and 'jb tad i/o'. I can take a picture of the front and back and post it if you think that will be of any help.
Another one of the chips on it has:
AKM
AK4531-VO
9810JAA
JAPAN
I have had this card ever since I first acquired the pc which I listed in the post. I remember having a cd with the drivers but I am unable to find it. The card worked fine before the reformat I did. If there is a way to check if the card is faulty please let me know and I will perform the check. Thanks for the continuing help.

If nothing else works here, go to this page and install/uninstall until one works or you quit.

Typical, some of the models are at the top middle of the card... like this one

Oh if it came with a CD, then it's likely to be the Creative oem sold in retail shops... you will have to either find the CD or find a download for it... which is always risky you can try this (http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=3051) but as you can see, this is why I am keen to get the exact model.

I have uninstalled all the drivers for the audio device and now I have a yellow question mark in the device manager showing 'other devices'. Multimedia audio controller has a yellow question mark under this tab. I took pictures of the card back and front because I could not find the model number that you specified I should find. I will list what the 'FCC' box contains and what is written on the back sticker as it may be difficult to see. Hopefully this makes it easier to find the correct driver.
The pics are too big to post on here so If there is some way I can get them to you, perhaps through email, let me know. I'm new to here and not sure if there is a way to private message or if I can post my email address on a thread.
FCC box:
S3300
FC Tested to comply with FCC standards
For home or office use.
Back sticker:
C139898 SBPCI 128 9831
ASSYNO: 01 REV: C
ASSEMBLED IN USA
Again thankyou for the continuing support on this issue.

You can host the pics elsewhere... then link... Flickr, Photobucket, Imageshack
If you don't have a free place, google free image hosting and pick one!

You can try and reduce their size using MS Paint and see if they are legible.
Open in Paint, click Image, then Stretch Skew and reduce both areas to 90. Save with a new file name.
If too large, redo at 80, etc.

OK, that card is old.... in theory, xp should have picked it up and installed the basic driver... in practice it rarely did.
right click here (http://ftp.lakesoft.net/ftp/drivers/audio/es1370_all_win/es1370wdm.zip) and select save as. Browse to a folder you can find again and download it Unzip the file, then go into device manager and the 1370 device and update the driver. Browse to where you unzipped the files and hopefully windows will do the rest.
If the driver above doesn't work, I have two other possible candidate, but I have to upload them first.

I installed the driver you suggested but there was a problem during the install. Windows wasn't able to copy all the files I believe, it got stuck on SBPCI.bmp. I tried twice but got the same problem. The device manager now has a yellow ! under the multimedia audio controller.

Did you try downloading it again?

I've tried re-downloading it into a folder instead of the desktop, I'm still getting the same problem. my system 'locks up' when the status bar is almost at 100% when the SBPCI.bmp file is being copied.

You started off by saying "I have the onboard audio controller turned off in the Bios.".
Why?
Most times onboard is as good (and compared to that old card probably better) as an add-on.
Have you tried it?
:)

Odd, it extracts fine for me.. are you using a downloader, or just IE or firefox? Are you using the XP extract or winzip/winrar?
anyway, I attach the SBPCI.bmp - it sounds like it is the last file to extract the others should be in the extracted folder...

According to the manual (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock370/815ep/cusl2-c/cusl2c-104.pdf) you have 6 channel (5.1) sound.
the drivers are here (http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&product=1&model=CUSL2-C&type=map&f_type=4)

Sorry, I didn't word my post properly. The problem occurs when I run the hardware wizard to install the audio controller. After i click the 'have disk' icon and after i select the folder with all the extracted files, a status bar comes up to show the files being copied. My system locks up when SBPCI.bmp is being copied, and the bar remains full.
CCT: I need the soundcard to work because my motherboard does not have an audio-in port I require to plug in my speaker jack.
Sidenotes: I updated the Bios on the motherboard and also installed the recent windows updates and tried to see if windows would automatically pick up the card but still having no luck.
NooNoo, the drivers that you posted - should i enable the audio controller before i try installing them or keep it disabled? I'm a bit confused as to what the actual driver(s) I need. One for the onboard audio controller and one for the soundcard itself? Please clarify.

I may be missing something - they show audio in when that mobo has audio;

That is really weird. I opened my case to see if the ports were hidden behind the metal in the back but they are not. I see that in the pic you posted there are 3 jack ports under a parallel port. On my motherboard I don't have any jack ports nor that parallel port shown on top. ??? The sticker on the motherboard says CUSL2 - C Under it is printed Rev 1.02. Only thing I could think of it is that my motherboard is an older model than the one shown in the manual.
Edit: I read some of the manual NooNoo linked in his previous post and discovered that the audio in ports are only 'on audio model only' on page 12. Guess my model sucks :X

No, it just means you thought you had the model with onboard audio. Did you actually see a disabled audio function in Bios or just think that you did?

Right now if I were you I would dump the creative card and get a $10 cmedia based card - never ever have these issues with cmedia cards.
If you have a pci card and onboard, you should disable the onboard so you and windows don't confuse which is which!
Have you tried replacing your copy with attached copy of sbpci.bmp?
Did you turn off your virus checker while installing the files?
Have you tried opening sbpci and see if you can display the bmp?

I like the idea of just getting a new card if its that inexpensive. I've had enough headache with this one. What exactly would I ask for in the computer store. I'm planning on going to http://canadacomputers.com/ since they have a location close to my house. Thanks for the help.

This is a cheap cmedia (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1111756&Sku=M501-1042)
this is a cmedia expensive (http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=018769&cid=SC.483)
I quite like this diamond as a mid range (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4321577&CatId=2771)
How much of an audiophile are you?
If you just want to hear sound on your computer and play the odd cd in background, the $14 will do.
